Idea: Mayor of The Boulevard

Postby PonySoprano » Mon Jul 24, 2006 9:00 pm

I was hanging out with some fellow Mustangs awhile back, and we came up with what we thought was an interesting idea (although this idea was presented amid a haze of beer, red wine, and scotch).

The idea is this - we have a Mayor of The Boulevard. The Mayor will have very few official duties. The ones we came up with include to have the ceremonial first drink of the day (in a discreet plastic cup, of course), to pop the cork on the champange bottle after a Mustang win to kick off the victory celebration, and to make sure The Boulevard maintains its unique beauty (interpret "beauty" any way you want - but you boys know what I mean  ) that makes it the best tailgating in the Southwest. This would be pretty much a figure-head position and an Ambassador of Goodwill.

We didn't get far enough to figure out how the Mayor would get "elected." The last dram from the bottle of Glenmorangie had been drained long before, and that seemed to drain us of our creativity.

Well, I just wanted to throw that against the wall and see what the good citizens of the Boulevard think.

I think the Mayor of the Boulevard is an excellent idea. With regard to how such a person is 'elected,' I think the position should be not unlike a parade's grand marshal; i.e. someone with a celebrity or quasi-celebrity status, with ties to SMU. Tom Rossley on an off week. Then again, Amber Campisi comes to mind. Maybe Paige Davis.

Perhaps to honor his end of game hijinks in a season where he was one year removed from his playing days, perhaps for the week of the Houston game Mr. Adami could be Mayor of the Blvd.

One week should go to Coach Doherty. Seems like something right up his alley, or...boulevard.

Tom Rossley came to the Austin alumni function and spoke highly of SMU to the families of SMU athletes and prospective students.

How about the person who brings the most first-time visitors to a game?

This really is a kind of silly/crazy idea that would actually work. One possibility is to do a celebrity deal a la Morgan Fairchild as honorary homecoming queen.

You could do differenent ones every year or every week. You could have a tent called the "Mayor's tent."

I definitely think the wardrobe requires a tophat and sash. And a cane. Or a scepter. Scepter would be a good look.

You know who would be a good celebrity mayor? Kathy Bates. She ain't been around much lately. I wonder where she be?

New candidate for Mayor: Amber Campisi. If only to irritate the people that are irritated by such things.

I think mrydel should be named permanent mayor of the Boulevard. I would then be named mayor pro tem and sit in his seat in abstentia.
