New Mustang, new to the forum, just all around n00b.Hey guys,
I just transferred to SMU Law from George Washington, and I’m primed for some football. In spite of my love of the game, I have somehow managed to always end up at schools with NO football program. In 7 years of higher education (and three schools) this will be my first season of college football. So…. Lets figure out this team and this season. From what I’ve gathered so far, we have a lot of potential with a Sophomore RB who may be on the verge of a breakout, and a RS Freshman at the helm who is the best prospect we’ve had in years (how would he compare to Josh McCown when he came out of HS?). We have two returning Sr.s at WR, so the skill positions seem to be intact (though with the obvious questions with a RSF at QB). How’s the O-line looking? On Defense, I don’t know where to begin. We have Joe Sturdivant heading up the secondary, and Justin Rodgers harassing opposing QBs, but beyond that where do you think we’re going to end up? The stats imply that we were decent against the run last year, is there hope that we can continue with that? For Special teams it looks like the Return game will be fun to watch with Henderson again this year How about kick coverage? And will we make a decent percent of our field goals this year? From everything I’ve seen so far, it looks like this Mustang team is on the verge. It really looks like we should be able manage a winning season this year, and be in position for C-USA championship runs in 07 and 08. Where does all this Pollyanna optimism come from? I’m a longtime Charger and NAVY fan, and hope springs eternal! lol. -COS
Congratulations on your choice to attend SMU Law!
Justin Willis had a very distinguished high school career, and had great passing numbers in the spring game. DeMyron Martin has the potential to be first team all-conference this year. Bobby Chase heads up a decently talented receiving corps. The O-line is the big question mark right now as far as I am concerned at least. I think they will be good enough to give Willis some time in the pocket, but maybe not enough at the very beginning. You named our top two Defensive players, but we have question marks at other points. There is a rumor true freshman Bryan McCann will see playing time at Cornerback. Special teams will be ok, with the big question marks coming in the kicking and punting game. We should have good return teams.

Welcome to the board. Sir, shooting-star, sir.
Frosh 2005 (TEN YEARS AGO!?!) The original Heavy Metal.
And welcome to 1988. You can take the "Frosh 2005" bit out of your signature. It's pretty obvious. ![]()
Congratulations belong to my wife and fellow Mustang, who rescued me from the East Coast.
To mix these two for a second... What's the report on Vincent Chase? Is he going to be catching some passes this year, or do you guys think he'll be kept in to block? I thought I read that he was a top rated TE in High School, but I have no idea how they are going to use him. -COS
We've got 2 quality TEs in Chase and Ryan Kennedy. Unfortunately, last year our offensive gameplans never really got them involved as receivers. Hopefully this year we'll see more passes thrown to both of them, because they're both legitimate threats.
With a new QB, having a TE that can release and get open quickly should go a long way towards ensuring he has an outlet to dump the ball too if he needs it. I guess the question then is whether or not Willis will have the patience to exploit that, or if he'll take off with the ball. -COS
Actually, we have three tight ends who could be targets. I hear the coaches are absolutely raving about Jeff Brock (and they've said there are a lot of ways to get Andrew McKinney involved -- blocking back, traditional blocking tight end, pass-catching target). Hell of a crew at that spot. Coach Bennett said Saturday that they're going to use the tight ends more this year in the passing game. Sure hope that's true. They're too good to be wasted.
Welcome Cadillac! Stop by our tent on the Boulevard -- across from Perkins Chapel -- and have a beer or two. I am excited, anxious, worried, and hopeful about the upcoming season for all of the reasons previously mentioned.
One thing to be warned about is that given the last 20 years, even some of the most "loyal" SMU fans on this board are quick to eat their own young, so to speak. It's bad enough when people have low expectations and we don't do so well, I am personally very worried about what might happen with slightly elevated expectations if we don't have a break out year. And if you give me a resume, I'll see what I can do -- we have an annoying lack of Mustang faithful in my office.
Oh, and last week Bobby Chase was in my office to sell me some Cutco knives and chat about the upcoming season (cleared with the compliance office of course).
He sounds genuinely excited about what Willis can do. He was very fired up about beating UAB to avoid them getting revenge for his last minute catch last year, and really wanted to get back at Tulance and spoil their homecoming party on September 30. His only big concern was the Tech game, not surprisingly since it is our first and hardest game this season.
Did you buy a set of knives for $3000?? Wink Wink
I am sorry, but WTF?
Re: New Mustang, new to the forum, just all around n00b.First off, welcome to not only the board but also to SMU! Hope you enjoy your stay there.
We hope to make it a special one! ![]()
It's his summer job -- did it last summer too. Apparently, a 6' 4" strapping young man going door to door to sell knives to desperate housewives can be quite successful -- plus flexible hours. Coach has joked a couple of times about Bobby's unusual summer job at some events I've been to. For me, it was more of an excuse to talk about the upcoming football season, but I did buy the kitchen shears after he cut a penny in a little spiral with them.
