Defense Strong In Scrimmage
Front Four Impressive In Practice
Aug. 12, 2006
DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU defense was sharp in the first scrimmage of the fall on Saturday, August 12, in Gerald J. Ford Stadium. Led by the strong play of its front four, the defense consistently put pressure on the SMU offense.
Throughout the night, the foursome of Brandon Bonds, Adrian Haywood, Cory Muse and Justin Rogers looked strong, often finding their way into the SMU backfield. Reggie Carrington also had a good night, registering several stops and picking off an early screen pass.
On the offensive side of the ball, Bobby Chase caught several passes while running backs Johnnie Fitzgerald and James Mapps both broke off long runs. On special teams, Thomas Morstead was impressive, hitting all four field goal attempts and booming numerous punts 60-plus yards.
After taking Sunday off, SMU will continue prep next week and will hold another scrimmage Saturday night, August 19. The Mustangs open the season September 2 when they travel to Lubbock to take on Texas Tech.
