...XTC, you are the definite SMU hoops guru on the board, where do you get all your information? Isn't it possible that there was something done wrong that wasnt leaked/readily known about? Someone who always gives me credible info told me about what i posted above. Like I said, there was no concrete evidence, but what I was told connected a lot of dots and involved Max Williams doing more than just squealing on Tubbs. What I heard hasnt been posted, although assumed...so I'm not gonna be the 1st to say it not knowing myself whether it's true or not
Re: ...
Well, if that is true, then Max Williams should be banned just as I have proposed from the very beginning of this debacle.
XTC, I have great respect for your information prowess, but Copeland told the press the violations were greater than what had been reported to the press. So, either Copeland lied boldly at his press conference (not out of the question, but surprising), or there were serious violations that have not been reported as yet. That's what's driving some of us crazy. If it was just Tide, burgers and a few secondary violations, then why not say that and say that the athletic department wanted to move in a different direction with Orsini coming on board. He didn't say that. So, perhaps our athletic department has offered to self-impose sanctions to the NCAA and there's been no public announcement because the NCAA hasn't told them if they were acceptable or not. Maybe that's why we're banking some scholarships. Maybe that's why Doherty is not visibly upset about the coming season, because it might be a non-postseason punishment anyway.
If there are more serious violations and penalties are to be imposed whether by us , NCAA, or both, we had better get everyone to hustle up. We are going nowhere this year but in a couple of years with some good recruiting we could. If we receive a "no post season" penalty this would sure be a good year to get it.
Mavs,
I get my information by looking for it. That’s a bit oversimplified, but that’s what it comes down to. I watch a lot of games and I talk to a lot of people, and I read a lot. I’ve been doing this for a long time, and I have a lot of friends and acquaintances in and around college basketball. I talk to people, our players, coaches, professors and administrators, summer league coaches, coaches at other schools, athletes in other sports, parents, and other people like me who just follow the game closely as their hobby. I watch a lot of games, people see me around a lot and we eventually meet and get to know each other. When they find out that I know what I’m talking about, some people come and ask me my opinion, and I ask them for theirs. That’s how it starts and eventually I get to know people. Lots of things are “possibleâ€. I will be the first to admit that it’s possible there is something out there I don’t know about, regarding Tubbs. I consider it possible, but highly unlikely. I think I’ve been thorough. Perhaps not, but I’m confident in what I’ve found out. As for it being possible that what you’ve posted might be right…… I’m not exactly sure what you’re saying. They (SMU) knew something but couldn’t prove it, I think is what you’re saying. But that opens up the question of “how did they know it was true, if they couldn’t prove itâ€? and exactly what was “itâ€? Most of this is too vague to give any real response to, you’re not giving me much to go on. I’d be more than willing to speak to who ever your friend is, in person. But so far, people who’ve made allegations on this message board have declined my offers to talk directly. So, I have to ask, whatever it was, can SMU prove it now? Can the NCAA prove it now? Will it be in the NCAA’s findings? The NCAA doesn’t have the same standards of proof of evidence that a court of law does, insinuation is often more than enough for them, so will whatever this secret is be in their report? The NCAA report will be a public document available to anyone, no secrets. Eaststang, yes, I am calling Jim Copeland a liar. If he wants to prove me wrong, all he has to do is tell us what the major violation was, simple and quick. If we had offered to self impose sanctions that would affect the 2006-2007 season, they would be public knowledge by now. If we were going to give up scholarships, we would have to announce it before this school year started, but instead we were still trying to sign a new player even after classes started. If we were going to take ourselves out of post-season play, we would have to inform the conference, and that info would be public. Removing yourself from post-season play is something that can come up later, but if we had already offered that to the NCAA, it wouldn’t be a secret. We would have to inform C-USA. I should mention that if SMU has done what you suggested, it would be another example of something very much out of the norm. When schools self-impose sanctions, they announce them publicaly at the same time as they offer them to the NCAA. There is no double-secret probation. Part of the whole process is coming forward, admitting your mistake, and making a public act of contrition, as it were. Trying to keep your punishment a secret sort of suggests that you really aren’t that contrite. I’ve stayed out of this debate most of the summer, because I see it as only being detrimental to the school and the program. The only reason I comment at all is that I don’t like people slandering Jimmy Tubbs. I asked jtstang to drop the subject because I’m afraid it’s something that could become truly divisive within our own fan base. SMU could put an end to this by simply being truthful. Speaking for myself, I’m confident in what I know, and I’m more than willing to just wait for the NCAA report to come out. I only entered this conversation because I don’t like the baseless innuendo’s and slander of Jimmy. Some people will believe what they want to believe regardless of what I say, so I’m content to wait to hear what the NCAA didn’t find. Try not to choke on the Kool-Aid.
I wish I could leave it alone, but the shroud of secrecy over this whole freaking thing is just sickening, and took a good man down in the process. How bad would it have been just to admit that the buyout came because the new order wanted to start in fresh direction and leave it at that? It would have been a helluva lot better than the bad press we got for firing Tubbs for phantom "violations". I don't have to say anymore about the debacle this has been, but I will remind folks occasionally to look for the NCAA report, if it ever comes out, and lets see if the "violations" were any worse than those that Doherty got before he even started.
...I agree, theres no point in discussing something not proven, I'd like to see the report, if it ever comes out, and we'll discuss from there
