September 1, 2007 - Question and Looking Ahead Already

Postby ThadFilms » Sun Sep 03, 2006 3:43 pm

Folks - Just wanted to post this now. Our game against Tech this year is not as big of a game as our game against Tech next year.

But before I get to that, I have a question - mostly for Mustangs35SMU - why does this game show as AT Texas Tech again? Is that the only we could get this deal done? Or is it incorrect?

If it's correct it means that we start the season with 3 out of four games on the road. I hope it's not correct, BUT if it is... it makes next seasons game at Jones SBC Stadium much bigger.

Only one home game - against UNT - and two other tough road games, TCU, and a Baylor team who (as Stallion can tell you) has been severely out-recruiting us the past couple years. A win against Tech NEXT year would be huge. 1-3 next season is highly likely, we need to figure out how to win one of those road games (Baylor or TCU more likely than Tech... but...) in order to build on the success of our current season. How we end up this season, will say a lot about how we do next season. Perhaps, you say I am looking too far ahead, and I am - but I merely intend to point out that last night's game will not define our season.

But now lets look back to last night... I saw (heard) what I needed to see (hear). We are well set up with our team to go 3-1 non-conference. Now let's go out and do it.

don't we also play Memphis, Southern Miss and Central Florida next year. Not to mention UTEP and UH are loading up for next year. As I remember we do play in Lubbock two straight years. It won't matter SMU won't be anywhere close to a bowl team next year. The only reason we have a shot this year is because of the schedule not merit.

No idea why it's at Tech again but it is.

And according to what I've seen we don't play Baylor next year...It's AT Arkansas State (which would make us play up at Arkansas State two years in a row  )

Here's how I have it for the future so far..
2007
9/01 @ Texas Tech
9/08 vs North Texas
9/15 @ Arkansas State
9/22 @ TCU
TBA vs Tulane
TBA Southern Miss
TBA Memphis
TBA UCF
TBA @ Tulsa
TBA vs Rice
TBA @ Houston
TBA vs UTEP

2008
9/13 vs Texas Tech
9/20 vs TCU
10/25 @ Navy
TBA @ Arkansas State
TBA @ Tulane
TBA Southern Miss
TBA Memphis
TBA UCF
TBA vs Tulsa
TBA @ Rice
TBA vs Houston
TBA @ UTEP

2009
9/19 @ Texas Tech
9/26 @ TCU
10/31 vs Navy
TBA vs Missouri

2010
9/4 vs Texas Tech
9/11 vs TCU
9/18 @ Missouri

2011
TBA @ Texas A&M

2012

I partially agree with you. I would have worded the final sentence differently - "the main reason we have a shot at a bowl this year is due to a soft non-conference schedule, next year will be a lot tougher." Your statement discounts the relative strides last years team made, to even allow us to think that they can merit a bowl appearance with a weak non-conference schedule.

That is why I put this out here. Simply to say, put the Tech game out of your mind - it has no effect on the rest of the season. Talk to me after our OOC schedule has ended.

No sacks and no picks, and only one blown play on defense. Remember that. And be upset about conservative play calling if you want... and all I have to say on that front is, we better not play conservative against UNT. I want to go in there with the mindset that we are going to run up the score on those guys. We have to play to win in every game for the remainder of the season.

We are a conservative team that runs the spread (??!!). I have no idea why we don't run it out of the I formation.
