Well you saw the score the last time UT and CU played....

re: Is it really illegal in Texas to carry a gun in plain sight in a car? If that's true, then I may actually live in the most gun friendly state in the Union
I believe it is illegal to carry a loaded hand gun in a car in Texas, but you can carry a loaded shotgun. You may be able to carry an unloaded handgun in a car with bullets in the trunk and tell the officer you are on the way to the gun range. In fact believe it or not I think it is perfectly legal to walk down Main Street in Dallas with a loaded shot gun. Of course officers would stop you and question you, but I think any charges could not be for the specific action of carrying the loaded shotgun because it is not against the law per se. BTW....I am shocked Mack Brown suspended a starter for anything short of mass murder, good for him!
Why? I expected this to happen. When has Mack ever protected his players? When Kwame Cavil and Dusty Renfro broke curfew a few years back he suspended them for the Cotton Bowl and Texas lost. He kicked the potentially most talented player, Ramonce Taylor, off the team this season for crap like this. Texas isn't immune from these things, but one thing you cannot say is that Mack has a habit of sweeping things under the rug. The one caveat to that is the Benson/plasma incident. I just simply don't recall what, if any, disciplinary action was taken on the part of Mack and the athletic department. So maybe you can debunk my statement with something I'm forgetting. However, I still think he handles these situations more admirably than some coaches in higher-profile programs. ![]() Official Cult of Chris Phillips Member
As a North Mesquite Alumni, real dissapointed in Tarrell and Aaron. I remember watching both of them in high school, Tarrell was the best high school running back I've ever seen in person, and Aaron was our best linebacker since Joe Bowden. Guess the wacky weed does it's damage again. Idiots.
With a conceal and carry license I'm pretty sure you can carry a loaded handgun with you, no matter where (short of obvious places). Without it, I'm not sure. You are in one of the most gun-friendly states in the union. As for walking down the street with a loaded shotgun, or for that matter deer rifle, is just a bad idea, illegal or not. Sir, shooting-star, sir.
Frosh 2005 (TEN YEARS AGO!?!) The original Heavy Metal.
I hear the UT University Chancellor was going to suspend these thugs if Mack Brown didn't, but Mack did the right thing even if it was under pressure.
From Ricky Williams, to Cedric Benson to Ramonce Taylor to Tarell Brown to Tyrell Gatewood it seems the Mack Brown Texas Longhorn Football Teams have more than their share of thugs. Not to mention UT baseball players arrested at 3am hiding from the police in the trunk of a car after beating someone senseless or Texas baseball players being arrested drunk in shopping centers in Arlington. You have to wonder what kind of program they are running down there in Austin? UT's Ricky Williams was, and is, a pot head. UT's star running back Cedric Benson was exonerated of marijuana and alcohol possession charges in April 2002 for "lack of sufficient evidence", but guilty or not, he still put himself into a bad place where bad things were going down. Benson was accused of breaking in an apartment to retrieve his stolen "plasma television set" pleaded no contest months later to misdemeanor criminal trespassing and was sentenced to spend eight days in jail that he ended up not serving because the "Austin jail was already full". (yeah sure!) In Oct 2003 UT's University of Texas Police charged UT backup QB Matt Nordgren with criminal mischief and starting UT CB Cedric Griffin with interfering with an emergency phone call. UT QB Matt Nordgren was arrested for criminal mischief which began after he "got out of his Lexus SUV". A Lexus? Then how can we forget about the incident in Madisonville, Texas not to long ago with the UT football players getting pulled over by a cop who found some marijuana in the vehicle they were traveling in. Don't forget University of Texas fullback Brock Edwards was sentenced to two years probation and 200 hours of community service and was ordered to pay $5,700 in restitution after pleading guilty to assault in a fraternity fight. Edwards, 20, pleaded guilty after being charged with aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury, a felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison. The charge was reduced to misdemeanor assault at the victim's request, prosecutors said. According to Travis County Assistant District Attorney David Luna, Edwards punched Thomas Graham in the face, knocking him out, and then kicked him in the face. Graham suffered a broken nose and had reconstructive surgery, Luna said. Edwards also was fined $1,500 by state District Judge Jon Wisser. Earlier this year in May 2006 UT running back Ramonce Taylor faced felony charges after Bell County sheriff's deputies found some five pounds of marijuana and a 40-caliber round of ammunition in his car. This all went down after a fight involving 100 people at a pecan farm, including Taylor. Sheriff's deputies found a backpack containing over five pounds of marijuana in the car, a second-degree felony punishable by 2-20 years in prison. Now we have additional Longhorns arrested this week on drug and weapons charges. Where does it stop? Not to mention UT Football has one of the worst graduation rates in the entire BIG 12! It is good that Mack Brown suspended this latest bunch of Longhorn thugs and even though Mack usually allows the legal process to work as well he should, Mack Brown must do something -- publicly -- to assure Longhorns fans, critics and most important, parents of recruits, that he is taking some kind of broad measures to prevent players from being in these embarrassing, bad situations.
For someone with such bvious venom for Texas you sure keep good tabs on what goes on in Austin better than someone who lives here and attended that University.

I don't remember which player was involved -- somehow I want to say it was Benson -- but I remember gagging when Coach Brown followed some incident by saying "we're going to let the legal system run its course." Of course, that is the right thing to do (which might be part of why it annoyed me so much), because whatever the incident was looked really bad and they happened to have a big game coming up. Having said that, Coach Brown is not alone. All coaches have to make such decisions.
Here in Virginia, if you were to walk down the street with a loaded gun (hand or rifle) IN PLAIN SIGHT, it may be stupid, but its not a crime. If you have it concealed then it is a crime, unless you have a permit. And we just changed that law to make it extremely easy for any "law abiding" citizen to get a carry permit. The law used to be that judges had discretion to issue carry permits. I once had an old watch repairman who petitioned the Court for one, and the Judge who was notorious for denying them said, "why do you need a carry permit?" The man had the best answer, I've ever heard. "I repair watches and sometimes I take my work home with me, and I'm just getting too old to out run them." The Judge laughed and granted the permit. So, come to Virginia the land of the truly Free.
FYI, Nordgren went to Bishop Lynch, so yeah they can afford a Lexus just like most families at SMU. And Benson was at an apartment and they found the weed in a girl's purse - so yeah, the charges were dropped.
Most big time programs have issues off the field - OU, ATM, tOSU, Miami, USC. "Then in the Arctic half-light of the canyon, all existence fades to a being with my soul and memories and the sounds of the Big Blackfoot River and a four-count rhythm and the hope that a fish will rise."
"Choir Boy Benson was in an apt and they found the drugs in a girls purse so they let him go"
But was Longhorn Cedric Benson framed when he broke in an apartment and later pled no contest to misdemeanor criminal trespassing and was sentenced to spend eight days in jail? Or was that all just a big misunderstanding too? C-ya @ Milos!
