PB Watch part 2: Orsini remarks in DMN 9.11.06

Postby RGV Pony » Sun Sep 10, 2006 11:36 pm

The last paragraph seems cryptic. Calvin says Orsini is "noncomittal" when asked if PB needs to go to a bowl game to save his job, but Orsini's last sentence is, "I'm just trying to help the coach and the players get to a bowl game.."

Now, if Orsini's trying to help (i.e. intends to see) the bowl game come to fruition...and it doesn't....well, he's still gonna be here...and the players will still be here....

For some reason, the image of Michael Corleone giving his brother Fredo that kiss in Godfather Part II seems to come to mind here...and we all know what happened to Fredo.

Uh-oh, the dreaded "vote of confidence" from the AD........................ never a good sign.

Orsini's 'hatchet men' come to say 'hello' to PB prior to Monday's practice session.

This is the quote in the story that will be 'dated' by 8:00 a.m. Monday.

In previous seasons, alumni and boosters contacted former athletic director Jim Copeland to voice displeasure with the direction of the football program.

"I haven't heard it yet and if I did, I would still say the same thing – there's a lot more football to be played," said Orsini, who started the SMU job in June.

I suspect his phone will be ringing off the wall, emails will be overloading his computer and faxes/postal letters will be enroute by then.

Welcome to SMU fandom, Mr. Orsini.

It's not cryptic at all. Let's be realistic...if he says we have to go to a bowl game and we don't, but let's say we go 7-5...well then he might have to back down.

Or, if he says we have to win 7 games, and we win 6 (which would be 6-4 from here on out) and lose those 4 games by a total of 12 points, well...

He is making appropriate comments, there are simply too many permutations / variations of possible outcomes.

Now, in GENERAL, I Think 7 wins is the minimum or the ASKS [pronounced in ebonics] is gonna fall

Hasn't heard from fans and alumni? I guess I don't count, cause I emailed him and voiced my displeasure with the situation on Saturday night.

On a side note, anybody need a patent attorney?

When the AD gets quoted after the seocnd game...

Postby Sam I Am » Mon Sep 11, 2006 12:41 pm

This about as early as an AD has ever had to start commenting about a football coach's job. He was careful not to express confidence in PB, but that he was trying to help the team win. The man could work at the U.N.

I just got off the phone with his secretary, Rosemary. Sweet lady. But she sounds like she's been rode hard and put up wet with the number of phone calls she's fielded today.

...with all due respect, MM1973, he does not need to hear from you today...send him short, concise e-mail, OK?

I was not calling his office about PB or the football team, FTT. I was calling his office on an entirely different matter.

But, just for argument's sake, why doesn't he need to hear from me or anyone else today? He's the AD. He's a public figure. It's part of his job to field calls from fans.

BTW, why don't you use HixsontoLeVias anymore?

Hard to see how an employee at a private university can be considered a public figure, but whatever. He has a hard job ahead of him...

OK, MM1968, I will play along...what exactly will you say to him today, and I hope it is not along the same lines as your Turner / Copeland tirade from '05.....enlighten us on this conversation, please.
