New Coach Suggestions

I think people have to look at who we could realistically get. Steve Marucci could get ANY college job he wants.

As far as Toledo, I don't think it's fair to judge him on one game in his first year as an OC. Look at the offenses he had at UCLA when he was the OC and head coach. He played a very exciting brand of football and had top five recruiting classes there.

Gary Barnet if we can convice the school would be ideal.

What about a Texas longhorn asst. coach, I don't know anything about them but would think this would be a logical progression.

Please people, can we at least get through the rest of September before we start comparing resumes.

Experience tells me that just about every season you lose a game that you thought you would win (see Tulane last year). But you ususally also win a game that nobody thought you would win (TCU). So, if this theory holds true, we have lost the game this year that we didn't think we would. Yes it hurts and I'm pissed off about it. Yes, we have not looked good in our losses, but I at least want to see what happens the next three games before I start posting on here that David McWilliams, Spike Dykes, or Kirk Herbstreit would be the answer to our prayers.

I agree. As I stated a couple of days ago, why throw out names until first, your coach is gone, and second, you know who is available. Worst case, more bad stuff happens now and Coach B is gone soon. Then names being bantered now are fun to speculate with. Or, Coach B lasts throughout the season but Orsini wants to change leadership. Then you have all types of folks to try and pick from during the every year merry-go-round of coaching changes. Or Bennett rights the ship and we continue forward with him. Regardless, none of us have control over who is picked, so if we want to play the game of guessing, lets see who is available when the time is right, and then have fun with the game.

We haven't had a head coach post DP with a winning percentage anywhere close to that!

I understand that we haven't. But my point is that the greatest high school coach of his era went to arguably the most talented college team at the time (maybe second to Alabama) and with all of ND's recruiting ability he still was a failure. Can you really tell me that .535 winning percentage is something to set as our goal?

Has anyone mentioned John Mackovic or John Cooper? Both are former Ohio State HCs, and Mac of course went on to coach at Texas. Both had success at Ohio State, particularly Cooper who had five double-digit win seasons in a six year span.

How about Lou Holtz or Gerry Dinardo?

I remember both names being mentioned before we hired Bennett. We really need a big name or the change will be worthless. Yes, both Holtz and Dinardo will require big $$$.

But they only need to add about 5,000 fans/game to pay for a big name guy.

Actually, Mackovic was the HC at the University of Illinois not Ohio State.

I have an innovative idea. We put the word out that we are looking for week-to-week coaches. We have some guru take all applications and rank them all. Whoever is at the top gets the job in week one.

Here's the deal:

You win, you get a fat check (say $75-100k) and you can come back next week.
You lose, you're out and the next guy takes over on Sunday. You get $0. You can reapply, but you'll be lower on the list.

We keep a few assistants on permanently, to acquiant each new coach with the players and the playbook. Coaches are welcome to add to the playbook, but anything added becomes the property of our team available for use by future coaches.

Several things could come of this system:
1) All of the inconsistency leads to a disorganized team and we go 0-12. Oh well, we got a bunch of media coverage (perhaps a "Coach of the week" column on ESPN.com), we spend $0 on a head coach, and we can go back to a traditional model.

2) We get a string of big names who want to be a part of something unique, or see us as a coaching sandbox with no real consequences and let loose every crazy idea they have. Some work for a game or two, and some don't. Fans keep coming, because they know that at least if we lose, it won't be the same old thing next week. We spend about what we do now on a coach, but there is still the extra media attention and ticket sales.

3) Some big name comes in for the big checks and turns us into a powerhouse. We pack Ford, we're all over the news, and all it costs is a huge salary.

*Please note: this is not meant to be serious. However, it's not much further out there than some of the other ideas in this thread. Go Mustangs!

This Saturday on Fox.... "The Coach" [show coach looking figure in silhouet].... find out who will lead the Mustangs onto the field versus <opponent here>. How will they overcome so and so's hamstring? Will so and so be able to forget his fumble from last week? Does so and so have one more miracle left in him? Find out on.... "The Coach"

It could air every week immediately before our game!

No, I am not saying that is a percentage that we should set as our goal...however, a percentage like that would be a huge improvement over our percentage post DP.
