Seriously, about the band.

Postby SMUltimedia » Mon Sep 25, 2006 8:43 am

Would it be so hard for the SMU band to play more than the fight song and Mustang Sally, etc. during football games?

Most college bands have a repetoire that includes classic favorites like the Imperial Death March from Star Wars, Black Sabbath's Iron Man and other fun songs to get the crowd into it.

Little jazzy ditties and the same 2 SMU spirit songs make me want to leap from the top of Ford by about the midpoint of the 2nd Quarter.

Band folks - is there a legitimate reason for this? It really drives myself (and PLENTY of other students) nuts.

The response will revolve around tradition, how they've played the same music since the Depression (or thereabout), and that's fine -- I'm very proud of SMU's tradition. But big band medleys just don't do it for anyone but the bigtime silverhairs in the crowd. They're not to be dismissed, to be sure, but they also aren't the only fans to be catered to, either.

I am by no means belittling the Mustang Band. They really are as spirited as their announcer claims, and they stay to the end (and beyond) of some games that a lot of us have missed or left early. Their enthusiasm is vital, and I really do appreciate everything the band does. But I'm with you, SMUltimedia -- time to move the music into the 20th century, if not the 21st.

What other students? There's only about 50 at each game (granted the past two games have been better but last season, I swear that UTEP game only had 20 students at the game if that.)

However, I do agree on some parts. I wouldn't mind hearing some new things (RRP2, Iron Man, Etc.) but I don't mind the band. I love hearing the fight song time and time again.

I am all with tradition, lets start with a real football program, then worry about the band's tradition.

Wonder if having to listen to that crap actually caused the Depression.

In defense of the students, the UTEP game was the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Since most of our students can afford to go home, that is what they did. I don't fault them for that.

I am not opposed to mixing up the music every once in a while, but look at what the SHSU band was throwing down. I'll take Peruna 300 times over generic HS band cr@p any day of the week.

Do you really want to hear a band that plays the same ____ as everybody else and high school bands? I don't hear any Aggies complaining about their band and they play only about 5 songs. Get over it!

What do you care? After you finish HS, you're not coming to SMU. For the love of God, man. Fill out an application.

I tell you what, give some money to the band so they can afford to fill out their repetoire with the music you want. Until then it ain't going to change. The people that financially support the band are the ones that like the music that is being played. Funny how that kind of thing works.

The things he listed as being "fun songs" have been played by other generic college bands since as far back as I was in school(early 90s), if not before then. Not exactly something new.

are you serious.. we have to give money to a band.. they are the band, we should be complaining about them playing too much not too little.. over the last two years i counted many times when they are sitting on their butts not playing.. Hell they play all the time at smu bball games.. they used to play thriller and that was awesome.. i don't think they have played thriller at the football games..

Peruna 2001... TAMU plays alot more than 5 songs, they are constantly playing songs..

Back in they day the SMU band created a new rule in the college rulebooks.. they were known to play perune over 200 x's a game... Since they are not allowed to play peruna over and over.. Fill it in w/ some new stuff please or atleast play Thriller, the students love that song at bball game..

I like how the alumni band moves around the stadium.. very good touch..

Somehow I don't think the band is going to change what they have been doing for decades just to suit people who don't even stay at the game long enough to see their halftime performance.
