I thought that other than the TD -- when he seemed to get his feet tangled while trying to time his jump -- Lowery played pretty well. He has, after all, exactly four games at CB under his belt. He's learning, but clearly he has some promise.

davidsmu94 wrote:Okay my wife gave me a kitchen pass to go so here is my two cents... which is probably about what it's worth.

Justin Willis- For the most part, I think he made smart decisions, I just wish he made those decisions a little faster. He hung around the pocket too long today, won't be able to do that next week. Arm is really limited, but hopefully his mind will compensate.

Ced.. Dorsey- Really good effort, Ced is a good football player, and did a great job.

James Mapps- Yeah the two fumbles, but his yardage in cleanup time was really impressive. I don't want this guy carrying the load every week, he looks like the perfect 3rd down back for us.

Offensive Line- Good, but not great performance. The line has improved quite alot from last year, but Arkansas State did get pressure too many times for my liking.

Kennedy- Probably his best game as a Mustang, great work

Bobby Chase- Was great today, his first catch was really good, and he had the big touchdown.

Givens & Sanders- Took a back seat for the most part today, but we are in good shape at WR next year.

Justin Rodgers- After a slow start, Justin looked like he found his game today, glad to see him play so well

Wilton McCray- Guy is 100% better than he was last year. Not afraid to put a helmet on someone

Carrigan- Nice hit on the goaline, I thought he played very well today

Devon Lowery- Touchdown, he gave away was really poor, I'd rather this guy didn't see the field unless it was a nickle situation

Jonathan Lindley- Solid game, had some really good breakups and layed the lumber on a couple of hits

Brian McCann- I'm really, really glad we have him, I think he's going to be a great corner

Special teams- I though our kickers were great today, probably as good as we have had it since DP

today what stuck out in my mind was the performance of the seniors, Chase, Kennedy, and Rodgers were all great today

Justin Willis- umm.. 15-24 for 151 yds very good when your team runs up 250+ yds rushing.. how about 9tds in his last 35 completions.. those are option QB numbers, HUGE... I loved his patience, maybe he stayed in the pocker to long but there was one play when he could have taken off running but he stayed behind the line of scrimmage and ended up completing a first down and there was another play when he avoided the rush 3 times and then was smart and threw the ball away.. mapps was supposed to go back on a throwback but he didn't..

Mapps and Dorsey- 257 rushing yards enough said.. broke tackles, i don't remember exactly how they did pass blocking though...mapps nearly averaged 10 yds a carry and how about that td late in teh game..

Kennedy- three tds very nice.. he is going to wreck havoc on def game plans

chase- used his body very well on a 3rd down conversion slant pattern.. then the big play...had his break out game

sanders and givens- had their off week.. but did you see sanders decleater on mapps 30+ yd run before half.. WOW

J Rog- 3 sacks and a forced fumble.. he used his head though, he couldn't get the sack so he slapped it out of qb's hand.. heads up.. also had 6 tackles

haywood bonds- anchored the defense which gave up less than a 100 yds rushing to a team that "can run the ball"

LB's- hawkins had 9 solo tackles, making the transition well.. carrington huge hit on qb near our goalline and had 5 tackles w/ 2 TFL...

2ndary- lowry forgot his def helmet and tried to make a pick and was burned... other than that ark st. could not his the side of a barn w/ a pass but true frosh mccann did have a pick and a fumble recovery...

special teams- moorestead.. 50 yd fg wind aided but still 50 yd fg.. his punting was fantastic, not wind aided.. coverage was fantastic, the box score i saw had ark st w/ 7 return yds, that cannot be right considering they had atleast 8 returns.. but coverage was fantastic.. i would like to see a little more hang time in cunninghams KO's though.. line drives don't help unless they take crazy bounces

overall - the team dominated in all three categories..

The key to our pass defense right now is being able to dominate up front and get a rush on the QB. If that can not be done we will have trouble. My remark on McCann was not meant to imply our secondary was top notch but rather that he as a true freshman shows the ability to become a true standout as he progresses.

McCann's pick was a nice play for sure. Great jump on that pass.

Why hasnt anyone mentioned Joe Sturdivant. I saw #29 all over the field. Not to mention the caused fumble on the goal line.

Sturdivant also recovered a fumble right in front of the SMU bench. I thought Coach Sawyer was going to run someone over, he was so excited and emphatic in his celebration.

Who did - Sturdivant? I couldn't see it, but I thought Rich Phillips said it was Adrian Haywood.

There were a couple of jump balls in the second quarter that he mistimed as well, but they went out of bounds. He had coverage problems during the course of the game.

Stallion, you are correct. The defensive formation where our corners stay low and our safties cover up the line was almost costly several times because the saftey was late getting over. A good passing team will kill us for that; luckily, this QB threw the ball out of bounds several times on that deep ball. Goode is late getting over to cover the wings, and takes bad angles at times. That is going to hurt us sooner or later. Goode, Lowery, and McCann (who is going to be fantastic) will all improve as the season goes on, but I don't know if we will improve enough to be ready for that UTEP game.

...you know the Tulane Coaches saw that as well. Not to mention the the Great Johnny Quinn and the Great Robert Johnson episodes. What exactly is Ricard's condition? Anybody know?

From what I have been able to gather, nobody outside the coaching staff knows and nobody is going to know until he walks onto the field in either pads or jeans.
