Post #591 What a beginning to the season... Reply

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We go from a blowout loss and a game we should have won to a three game winning streak. Everyone knew coming into the season that we had talented wide receivers, a good defensive line, and a strong special teams game. These still all hold true, but we have added a new dimension. The "Willis factor", Justin is really starting to come along, he looks better and better every game. Two plays really impressed me tonight, one was where he juked a couple of lineman and linebackers in the backfield trying to evade the loss, he got out of trouble and threw a ball down field for a 15 yard pass. Second was the touchdown run by Willis, his football knowledge came out on this play as he was tackled but he was laying on a lineman and he realized that nothing was touching the ground so he rolled into the endzone. Two plays like that are ones that you don't expect from a freshman QB. As far as the RB's go I am a big James Mapps fan, but I think Dorsey had a good game tonight, his stats weren't amazing, but he had some fabulous runs and has very quick feet. Good news for the Mustangs is they should have Martin back for the UTEP game on Saturday he might not be his usual self but he can sure help us put the ball in the endzone when we are on the 2! Special teams looked fabulous, our kicking game, punting game, and return game all look phenominal, best in CUSA no question! Our defense had a great first 2 1/2 quarters 0 points! Although we showed a weakness in defending the no huddle. All around great effort by the Mustangs, lets see how much we improved as we play probably the best team in CUSA next week. We need a big game out of the special teams corps to pull this one off. I think we can do it and I think we will do it!

GO PONIES!!!

speaking of special teams.. how about two yes TWO tackles by freshman kicker kellis cunningham.. my buddy reminded me that his recruiting video was full of big hits which led Phil to ask him , "why is there little kicking on your video?" Kellis answered w/," I just wanted you to know that I am tough kicker!"

I am very glad that the coaches decided to put dorsey in late in the game, b/c mapps just couldn't do his thing last night b/c the field was so slick.. he will be much better on grass this week at UTEP

Cunningham's first tackle was beautiful -- he drilled that guy. When I interviewed him as a HS senior after he committed to SMU, we talked for 20 minutes before he even brought up kicking. He talked about his role as a WR in high school, and how he loves to block, hit, etc. .... he's a seriously tough kicker. I'd love it if he never had to make a tackle, but it's good to know he can.

Unless they just changed this season, UTEP also has artificial turf.

The first was tipped by a Tulane player out of bounds, thus the ball wasn't put on the 35.

The second kickoff went out of bounds, and we get a fumble on the first play...If Kellis hadn't kicked it out of bounds, would we have that turnover? Way to go Kellis.

What?

Do you think PB encourages his kickers to kick out of bounds, so we can get a turnover on the next play?

I doubt PB was happy with the kicking side of the game.

EDIT: "Punting" was good, returns excellent, & Hasson smothered that ball, Indian Mustang. But we missed a BIG FG in Q4 & K/O out-of-bounds keep your spec teams from being great...

I bet Scefco wished he had a kicker smart enough to kick the damn ball out of bounds. Really surprised Henderson got to touch that ball. So is he leading the nation now-I think he was 4th coming in. Is he our first true All-American in years. He may not get many more chances if they saw that run last Nite.

When Jesse made that cut across the field, it was near our seating section. He just changed gears & everyone else looked slow motion. It was incredible.

Good point, stallion: Price will not be as foolish

Good point -- Great snag by Hasson!

Isn't Cunningham also dealing with some kind of strain in his groin or leg or something? That surely will mess with a kicker's motion.
