Let us each be consistantWhatever side on which you want to come down, please maintain some level of consistancy. We have ridiculed schools such as UT or even Florida just yesterday for beng lax on players under investigation or recently arrested for some violation. Many have screamed that the kids should be suspended or even kicked out of school. If that was your belief, no matter what the final outcome, you have to be consistant and understand what SMU did with Willis. If you have thought the players should have been free to play until final outcome of any investigation or trial, then that is the belief you should have with Willis. But I have read ths board for many years and I hear many that have called for suspensions of other teams players now calling for the freedom to play Willis. Just be consistant in how you want the events to be handled. You should not scream for a UT player to be banned and an SMU player to play, or vice versa.
Hopefully tomorrow when the facts are released, and the decision makers are together, they can let Willis resume his postion. I for one, although very disappointed do believe that from what I have heard the decision to suspend was correct, however, also, based on what I have heard I believe the suspension should be lifted tomorrow. Of course unknown facts could change my thoughts. And I further believe that Florida's decision to allow their player to play yesterday was wrong. I believe that UT was correct in suspend a couple of their players a week or so ago and then subsequently correct in reinstating them when the facts were laid out. Simply my opinion of the recent events.
Nice post, mrydel. Thoughtful and level-headed.
If it is factual that Willis was out past curfew, then suspension is warranted on that issue alone. The other alleged events and all of the issues surrounding complicate the matter more. "Moderation in all things, and especially in Absoluts [vodka]." The Benediction, Doc Breeden, circa 1992
Orsini and Bennett made the correct long term decisionIt hurt to lose a winnable game last night at UTEP.
However, Orsini and Bennett absolutely made the right call. Their decision will positively impact the program for four years, and perhaps 40 years in the case of the individual player involved. Orsini suffers neither cheaters nor fools. Orsini will not take short cuts. Orsini will not "make exceptions" as one poster nauseatingly pled for. SMU has hired high level leaders who cheated. SMU has hired honest leaders who could not perform at a high level. Orsini is a different breed. He is an honest, tough leader who has performed at a high level his entire lifetime.
If Willis was suspended for curfew violations then the other SMU player involved would probably have been punished as well.
Isn't it a little early to call Orsini "a different breed"? He is what, 6 months into the job. Let's not not call him the savior until he accomplishes a few things. Many people at his previous stops don't see it the way you do. Only time will tell.
O-V-E-R-R-A-T-E-D.
You are the same group of fools who make fun of Caven for benching Flanigan and Womack against TCU in 1997.
I'll second that.
I'm with you UNF - every fan out there thinks their program is brimming over with integrity and their rivals are criminals. Its all kid of a joke really. Its all just become a business where everyone uses everyone else.
The athletes use the system to try to get noticed in order to hit the NFL lottery. The alums use the athletic department and players to assimilate some sort of glory onto themselves that they have not earned. The athletic department personnel use the program to create an income stream (for some) that is typically used to line the pockets of athletic personnel. The University uses the program to increae applications and also raise money for other programs. All remoras - no sharks.
