Poynter Named To Rimington Trophy Watch List
Junior Up For National Honor
Oct. 10, 2006

DALLAS (SMU) - Mustang center Ben Poynter has been named to the 2006 Rimington Trophy Watch List, the Rimington committee announced today. The Rimington Trophy is awarded to the outstanding college offensive center in NCAA Division I-A.

Poynter, a junior from Arlington, has started 22 straight games over last three years and is on pace for 40-plus starts over his career. Poynter has graded out at over 90 percent this season and leads an SMU line that has allowed just 10 sacks on the year.

The junior, who has already been accepted to SMU's Cox School of Business, won SMU's Charles H. Trigg Blocking Award last season and was the recipient of the James Bradley "New Mustang" Award for consistent play as a freshman.

A former walk-on, Poynter was awarded a scholarship prior to the 2004 season and often serves as a volunteer for Dallas Heart House, a free after-school program dedicated to providing a safe haven and academic support to low-income children and encouraging them to become good citizens.

The winner of the Rimington Trophy will be selected by determining the consensus All-American center pick from four existing All-America Teams. While more than a dozen All-America football teams are selected annually, the Rimington Trophy committee will use these four prestigious teams to determine a winner: American Football Coaches Association, Walter Camp Foundation, Sporting News, and the Football Writers Association of America.

I am very glad to hear that. Knowing Ben, I know that he is a great individual and is the heart and sole of that line. He works as hard as anyone else on that team and is always willing to go the extra yard in practice.

Did anyone see that piece that WFAA ch. 8 did on Ben late this summer?
If not I suggest you check it out on wfaa.com

Goodjob Ben and keep it up!

From a former walk-on to a candidate for the best in the country at his position? Absolutely amazing.

That just goes to show you how hard Ben has worked over the years. He is the captain of the line and one hell of a worker...

Wouldn't it be nice to see this kind of story on the 10 p.m. news?

Congratulations, Ben! I met your parents when the team was leaving last week for UTEP. All of the Poynters are 'class acts'!

Hope you win the award!

Ben has been on the 10 pm news once but it would be even sweeter to see him win this award and be on the news again.
