CUSA STANDINGS...

EAST W-L OVERALL

USM 2-1 4-3
ECU 2-2 3-4
UAB 2-2 3-5
Mar 1-2 2-5
UCF 1-2 2-5
Mem 0-3 1-6

WEST W-L OVERALL
Tulsa 3-0 6-1
UH 3-1 5-3
UTEP 2-1 4-3
SMU 2-2 4-4
Rice 2-2 3-5
Tulane 1-3 2-5

I know that most of you are already talking about bowl game possibility and others are saying that it is still TOO EARLY to talk about a bowl game but the point of playing CFB is to win and play in a bowl game. I have been saying that the team needs to focus one game at a time and saying that after the UAB game we can talk about bowls.

It appears that 4 teams from the West are left in contention for 5 of the CUSA bids. Rice and Tulane are still in contention but with 5 Ls it appears their years are done. Although there is only 1 team in the East that is above .500, I think 2 teams from the East become bowl eligible.

At 3-5, UAB is our next obstacle. THIS IS OUR BIGGEST GAME OF THE YEAR. This game will either make our season or break it. A win will put us one win away from bowl eligible and will knock out UAB from the postseason.

To me, UAB and Rice look like very winnable games. I think that we can win out like we did last year when we ended the year with a 3 game win streak. SMU will take each day leading up to the UAB game very seriously knowing that their season is on the line come Halloween infront of a national televised audience.

I think SMU will get 6 wins and make a bowl game but the team MUST get better each day leading up to OCT. 31.

GO STANGS!

You think we can beat Tulsa? I wish I was that optimistic.

Every game is winnable if you look at it like this: The team that comes out and plays the hardest for 60 min. will win. We have pulled out 4 wins and have not really played 60 min.

Do you think before the year started that Colorado thought they would lose to a I-AA team or would you have thought that I-AA team could have beat CU at the start of the year???

I think 6 I-AA teams have knocked off I-A BCS conference schools....So I think we can win out. Last year when the team went to Houston, no one thought we could win that game. Not many people expected us to leave H-Town with a win. And not many people thought we could end the year with a win over UTEP.

Beating Tulsa can happen. The Mustangs need to take it one Step at a time though.

Absolutely beating Tulsa is possible. I've watched them play, and they're OK, but there's no overwhelming talent there. They're pretty disciplined and don't make a lot of mental mistakes -- got to give them credit for that.

For the time being, the priority is beating UAB.

Go Mustangs!

Nobody thought we'd win against UTEP last year either. I must say going from 2-6 to 5-6 last year was very exciting.

Wow... 2-6 after 8 games in 2005, 4-4 after 8 games in 2006. That makes me feel a bit better.

Ok I'll buy your Kool-aid. I would love to look back at an 8-4 season.

We have been playing WELL at home. We haven't lost in a while now, and our next *3* games are at home. We have a week and a half to prepare for UAB on national television. We should get Demyron and Cory back in that time span I would hope.

After that, we have a week and a half to prepare for Houston.

Tulsa -- the last time we met at Ford we beat them in overtime after letting them creep back into the game. Tulsa never has brought their A game to Ford and I don't feel they will this year either. We are VERY vulnerable to the pass but passing is not carrying Tulsa.

Rice -- we haven't won @ Rice in 20 years and they are playing some serious ball right now. It won't be easy.

We get 3 straight in OUR house where we have been playing some great football. We should beat UAB and then take down either Houston or Tulsa and be 6-5 going into Rice. No question in my mind...and I didn't drink Kool-Aid.

With 3 of our 4 at home there is no reason to not count on the same team showing up at Ford who have been beating a*s at home the past 5 home games.

I will buy into the idea that SMU is CAPABLE of beating everyone on the remaining schedule...and it certainly helps that 3 of the 4 games are at Ford. You are right that SMU's bowl hopes depend on beating UAB...that is a MUST win and I still think SMU has to win 3 of these last 4 to have any hopes of a bowl bid. Even at 7-5, the bowls may opt for a 6-6 team from the east that will bring more fans. The bowls (committee members/decision makers) will be watching and will notice the 20,000 empty seats in Ford Stadium on Halloween

We haven't lost a home game in over a year. When was the last time we could say that?

Well, under that definition, since this team has not been playing college football for the last twenty years, I think giving a good effort and being competitive should be our acheivable goal for the rest of this season.

UAB is a break but not make game. We lose and we are basically done. Win and we still have a shot. 8)

I'd agree with that, I suppose. I just keep coming to the realization that with that defensive effort we say yesterday, there is no way we beat Houston AND Tulsa and perhaps even Rice. :x

You are making my point. A win over UAB will not make our season. Now whether will still have a shot may be debatable especially with our loss to ECU. ECU could have made our season since that would make it very difficult for them to qualify and we would still have had two good chances to qualify.

Right. I said I agreed with you. HOWEVER, I'm not necessarily jumping in with both feet on the "we still have a shot" part.
