ESPN just reported (quoting "a source") that Tulsa head coach Steve Kragthorpe is believed to be a candidate for the North Carolina job. The network also quoted an NFL scout as saying he'd "be surprised" if Kragthorpe is in Tulsa next year.

I wonder if he'll schedule future CUSA teams if he goes to UNC.

i'm ignorant of how scheduling works. does the head coach have much pull? watching unc makes me think smu would have a decent shot.

The coaches have a lot of the decision making but it all ends back with the schools Athletic Department. It's all about time, distance, and money.

I've also heard Kragthorpe's name attached to the N.C. State job, should Amato get hosed at years end.

Thanks J.T. I've always wanted SMU to schedule more teams like UNC, Duke, Uconn, etc. because 1.) it gives us more of a national presence and 2.) it gives us a chance to beat a team from a BCS conference. I guess Baylor is our best chance right now athough we'll have to wait till next season.

plenty of schools will be courting Kragthorpe; he's done a great job at turning Tulsa's football program around

Poor Tulsa always gets screwed. Everytime they get a decent coach and start winning they bolt.

Yeah, poor Tulsa. SMU should be so unlucky as to get a decent coach and start winning occasionally.

You wouldn't leave Tulsa, Okla., for Chapel Hill, N.C.?
I'd make that move even if Carolina WASN'T in the ACC. That's a great school in a gorgeous part of the country.
And it IS in the ACC.

If you are a football coach, I wouldn't go to UNC, no. He will have better opportunities than that. If he were barely a name from North Texas or UL-La or something, then sure...but he is a proven commodity at Tulsa now. He will get better opportunities.
You have to consider the future potential to have your football coaching aspirations drown into futility...UNC is just such a place (are they going to beat a re-surgent Clemson, Miami, VaTech, FSU, GaTech, etc etc etc? No, never.)
I'm sure Lexington, Kentucky is nice, too. As is Durham, NC. Wanna go there and compete with Basketball?
I was thinking that stealing Krag for SMU would be a good coup...he would be able to recruit better at SMU than Tulsa...(Not that SMU is the better oportunity that I was previously talking about..just a side comment).

If he bolts, I wonder how many of Tulsa's recruits will stay committed?

What is so wrong with UNC? Mack Brown was able to come out of UNC as a better coach and was able to win at UNC. Look where Mack is now.
