I have said since fall scrimmages that Mapps was a good back. I think if he cotinues to work hard he could be one of the best backs at SMU in a long time. The guy has great field vision and tremendous cut back ability and speed. I just hope he really pushes himself in the off season next year because he has potential to be great. Also, I hope the Coaches will let him play alot more the rest of this year as he will get better with more playing time. They need to get him more carries to the outside where he can show his speed and ability to cut through the secondary. 9.5 yards a carry tonight should cause Coaches to take notice...... I know, he needs to improve his pass blocking and probably his strength in the off season. In the meantime his running is fun to watch.

quickness and agility not speed are his strength. He needs to run in space to use his vision and cutting ability. That requires an offensive line to open holes. He will look quite ordinary if they don't give him that space.

And I think we've seen that in the games he's been in. He has great vision, and when has a hole, he has great speed TO the hole.. and has good football speed, but not necessarily good open field speed. When the hole isnt there, he's usually tackled for a sure loss. Great cuts too though.. I really like him.. strong as an ox, but I love how Martin plays low.. we saw it on the one great run he had when he hid behind the tackles and bounced it outside for another 10 yards. We really need a healthy DM.

Generally I agree but a 4.5 forty is not slow and the guy is explosive which makes him appear even faster. That is why I would like to get him the ball occasionally to the outside on an misdirection option or pitch which we can run. Once he gets around the corner the guy is trouble in the secondary as we have seen.

I will say this James Mapps is the best rb SMU has got!!! Martain my be physically stronger but is a baby! You can say he's not healty I'm saying Mapps is just flat out better. You say mapps gets stopped for loses when theres no hole 1 game he got stopped for loses on the terrible Superdome turf like everybody else. Mapps is good at creating things when they are not there something none of the other rb's can do!!!!! Go Ponies! By the way 5.1 yrds per carry aint bad boys.

Mapps is NOT better than a healthy Martin. Lets see this for what it really is. Our ideal situation is having Martin beat the crap out of people and Mapps to come in as a change of pace and bust a big play... nothing wrong with that.

After driving a couple of hours home after the game, I saw brief parts of the replay on ESPN2. The only thing I took from it was that Martin looks a lot faster, tougher, and more powerful on TV than I thought he was live. Don't know why. Just does.

Not knocking Mapps; that speed/power/agility combo w/ Willis, Martin, and Mapps in the offense means something. The more experience they get, the better they will be.

mapps is a stud, he is great, I would rather see him and Cedrick get the bulk of the carries in the game, ced is alot more of power back then Demyron, and he dosent get hurt after every play!!!

Martin may not be fully healthy this season. I hope he is. But I think all this stems from breaking his foot. That happens. Then it is hard to stay in shape while you rehab.

Martin can be great when healthy. He looked like his hams were tightening up on him. He was not running normally.

It is great to have Mapps and our other backs. We do not need to start any kind of RB controversy, especially one that starts bagging on one of our great backs.

DM is definitely the workhorse back.. Mapps makes an excellent change of pace back as Bennett has said. He's right about this. I love Dorsey though.. why do we not use him more dumping it off to him over the middle? Just as long as it's not a shovel pass. I swear there's not a scarier play in college football to me.

THIS IS GREAT. We have too many really good backs.

Come on guys be happy. That is what I like about Bennett. He has or is building a team.

Is Mapps related to the SMU great Raymond Mapps from the 70's?

You don't have clearance from PB to be writing on this board :!:

I fear another suspension may be in order :!:
