Where is the Love True SMU FANS?

Postby Bigtime41 » Wed Nov 01, 2006 3:51 pm

There was a question regarding how the Women's scrimmage went and I was the only one that responded based on my attendance. Does the student body or the alumni support Women's Basketball? Is there no interest in the upcoming season? Is Women's basketball not worthy of your interest or support? Inquiring minds just want to know.

I don't mean to be a [deleted], cause I really like Rhonda Rompola and try to go to as many women's games as possible, but when our fans don't turn out for the marquee sports (i.e. Football & Men's Bball) much less some of our other stellar programs (i.e. #2 ranked men's soccer) why are you shocked that they don't turn out for women's bball?

I have season tickets for both teams. Unfortunately, there is very little support for the women's team (and the men don't get enough either). Most women's games will have the same 10-20 students and a few hundred alumni, plus the parents of the visiting players. The students are really missing out on a consistently winning team.

BRING BACK THE GLORY DAYS OF SMU FOOTBALL!!!

For some strange reason, one of the few universities that REFUSE to use their school colors: Harvard Crimson & Yale Blue.

Hasn't the women's program accomplished that? The program is 270-176 under Rompola with numerous NCAA and WNIT appearances. How much more winning is necessary before the support will increase?

GEtting to the final four?

Postby Bigtime41 » Thu Nov 02, 2006 4:06 pm

I am shocked because I am new to SMU athletics and I thought that there would be more support. I read the comments of people complaining about the lack of support but yet those complaining don't support. SMU has one of the best Freshmen classes they have ever had and they are looking to turn the corner and get back into the dance. It would be nice to see the level of excitement here in Dallas that you see on other campuses. So I guess they will have to win a National Championship to get people in the seats? Will they show before they win it or after they win? Will the support be there when it is looking like they are going to win or do they have to win it and then the next year the support will show up?

This logic is crazy to me and you folks so far at SMU are fair weather fans and that 's a shame!

My son and I will be there tonight to kick off the season. We try to go to as many of the Ladies' games as possible but can't make all of them.

Rompola at one time had good support that was growing (about
-7 years ago) however, over the past six years we haven't been
a very good team. Starting with last year, we have gone
16-14; 19-11; 13-15; 16-15; 12-18; and 17-12.

The home record has been good to very good with the past 6 yrs
being 10-6; 13-3; 7-6; 9-4; 7-7; and 10-4.

However, we are a terrible team on the road going
6-8; 6-8; 6-8; 7-11; 2-8; and 7-8. On some of these years we had a
few games at neutral sites such as tournaments so if you try to total
the home and away games to see the whole record they don't always
add.

Good Luck Lady Mustangs - this could be one of your better years.

I think you are incorrect about SMU fans being fair Weather. I propose that Dallas fans as a whole are fair weather fans. Add to the mix that Women's basketball is not a well attended sport at the majority of its venues and you get what you have at SMU. Is it right? I don't think so, but it is what it is, and I doubt that even a championship team would get a sellout at Moody. Has the men's soccer team sold out a home game this season?

THat is sad

Postby Bigtime41 » Mon Nov 06, 2006 2:56 pm

It's sad that the thought is even if SMU comens Basketball were to turn the corner and win a national Champiionship that people would not come out to support them. That is evident that I posted something on the Womens and got 8 responses where with the men it's more than double that. I will stay positive and hopeful that the student body will support an up and coming winner. You heard it first!

Along the line of womens BB, and forgive me but I am one of those that does not follow it as closely as I could. Did we not lose 2 starters for the year to injury. I thought that had been posted earlier. If that is true, do we still have the makings of a good team this year? If so, I am very impressed with the depth.

Yes and No

Postby Bigtime41 » Mon Nov 06, 2006 3:20 pm

Katie Gross is really the only one right now that I know of that will be out for the season possibly. Everyone else will be back by the start of the season. THe freshmen class will make a lot of nosie and provides much needed depth at 1-4 positions. They are playing tonight and if you get a chance come out and see them. They will be playing an exciting brand of ball.

It is tough for me to ever make a BB game being in Arkansas. I rely on All Access to see what things look like. I appreciate the info. I thought sure there were 2 that went down at the same time but must have been mistaken. Good luck to the ladies.

There were two reported injuries at the same time, I'm guessing one of them wasn't as serious and will not keep the injured person from playing.

Kenzie Cole was the other injury. Anyone have a report on her?
