We wish Scott the very best in his new endeavor.

Scott was always available and helpful whenever asked.

We certainly missed Scott visiting with everyone on the BLVD this season.

Thanks Scott for your work and professionalism at SMU!

RICHMOND, Va. – Virginia Commonwealth University Director of Athletics Norwood T. Teague has announced the hiring of Scott Secules as the Senior Associate Athletic Director for External Affairs. Secules, who will take over the position effective Dec. 1, will oversee the department’s development, marketing, and public relations efforts.

“It is an honor to accept this position at VCU and I am grateful to Norwood [Teague] for this extraordinary opportunity,” commented Secules. “VCU Athletics is doing so many great things and really becoming a nationally recognized program. With all of our efforts, I am excited to see where we can all go.”

“I am very excited to have Scott on board at VCU,” explained Teague. “He brings a wealth of experience and enthusiasm to our staff, along with a proven track record in regards to both development and marketing. This is a real coup for VCU Athletics and I look forward to Scott’s return to the Commonwealth.”

“We are extremely excited about Scott Secules joining the VCU athletic family,” said VCU President Dr. Eugene Trani. “He brings a great deal of experience to the external side, and will be a great addition to the team our new Athletic Director Norwood Teague is putting into place."

Secules makes his way to Richmond via Southern Methodist University, where he has served in several capacities since joining the athletic department in 1995. In his most recent position as the Senior Associate Athletic Director, Secules oversaw the external affairs of the athletic department. He was instrumental in assisting the department raise more than $90 million in capital, annual, and special-project support. He was responsible for the planning and implementation of the athletics fundraising component of the University’s capital campaign, to date raising approximately $11 million of the $13 million needed to build the institution’s new basketball practice facility.

Moreover, Secules guided the Mustang Club Board of Directors and the Letterman’s Association Board of Directors, while coordinating and facilitating the activities of the department’s management team and senior staff. He administered all of SMU’s Olympic sports programs, partnered with faculty to develop a Leadership Institute, and served as a member of the University Athletic Council.

Prior to being promoted to the department’s senior staff and overseeing its internal and external operations, Secules held the Associate Athletic Director for Development position. In this role, he represented the athletics department for the University’s $541 million Campaign for SMU – the most successful campaign in the history of the institution – supervising the funding for the $56.8 million, 32,000-seat Gerald J. Ford Stadium for the Mustang football program. He also managed and directed all of the operations and activities associated with the Mustang Club, along with facilitating the activities of the management team staff.

Secules also served as the Director of Season Ticket Sales for two years. His most notable accomplishment was planning, implementing, and executing the football season ticket sales strategy for the inaugural season in Gerald J. Ford Stadium, ultimately growing football season ticket sales by more than 300 percent.

Prior to working with season tickets, Secules initially joined the athletic department as the Assistant Executive Director of the SMU Mustang Club, working on all aspects of the organization’s annual fundraising operations, while assisting in the planning, management, and execution of the Mustang Club’s annual volunteer-driven Morgan Campaign Fund Drive.

Before entering the ranks of college athletics, Secules was a sixth round pick by the Dallas Cowboys in the 1988 NFL Draft. He spent six seasons as a quarterback in the league, competing for Dallas, Miami, and New England.

Secules, a 1987 graduate of the University of Virginia where he was a four-year letterwinner in football, is married to the former Tammy Billings. The couple has three children: Kelsey (14), Rebecca (12), and Tommy (10).
