Isn't It Highly Unusual For An AD to......

Postby Insane_Pony_Posse » Tue Nov 28, 2006 10:02 am

Is it not highly unusual for an athletic director to call a meeting with the football team right
after the season ends unless it is to inform the team a coaching change has been made?

Maybe unusual, but certainly not unheard of. This is our first go-round with Steve-O in the big chair, so maybe this is standard practice for him. I don't know -- just a guess.

I'm sure all of this waiting is doing wonders for recruiting.

I doubt the waiting game is hurting recruiting. What hurts recruiting is when our competition is playing in bowl games and we are not.

As long as the waiting doesn't drag on ad nauseum, I don't think it's a big issue. If Steve-O decides to make a change and drags his feet for six weeks hiring a replacement, THEN it's an issue. But that sure doesn't seem to be his style.

Look, taking 48 hours to wrap this thing up is pretty short. I would expect a decision by 5:00PM, assuming they reach an agreement on either a package or a restructuring of the assistants and staff. If this thing lingers for several days more, you would be right to be concerned. It would have been wrong to complete something 24 hours after the conclusion of the Rice game as everyone was wearing their feeling on their sleeve and not thinking with their heads. This is a major decision for both men. Even keeping the status quo is a major decision that has major ramifications, i.e., is Phil just a lame duck for one more year?, etc.

No, it isn't. Standard procedure to review the season with the coach. Just like you would have a project review at work to discuss how it went and changes that need to be made for next time.

Yes, as a former player, I would find it highly unusual for the AD to call a meeting with the football team. Based solely on this, I would say that Bennett is gone.

It was my understanding that the team meeting was already planned by Bennett after the Rice game, as they have done every year.

Am I mistaken about today's meeting?

re: No, it isn't. Standard procedure to review the season with the coach

But I didn't ask about the AD meeting "with the coach" at the end of the season.

I would agree meeting a coach would be standard procedure.

What I see as unsual is the athletic director calling to meet
with the players right after the season ends.

If the AD was going to keep the coach why would he call a
meeting with the players?

Or maybe he wants to give the team an appreciation speach for their hard work and to point out how much harder they are going to have to work next year to help PB stay beyond that time frame. Hmmmm...maybe...guess we will just have to wait to find out. Carry on with your speculations.
