We've got Matt Doherty as head coach, who seemingly is pushing all the right buttons, in the community, with the press, with the alumni, etc.
It hasn't always been pretty, but he has the Ponies standing at 7-and-freakin'-1!
OK, there was no public announcement. Don't care. I wish Jimmy well. But it doesn't matter, and whining about it on a fan messageboard changes nothing. If you're truly obsessed about it, call Steve-O, and don't post the response. I'm pretty thrilled with Coach Doherty.

I like Doherty too, I just don't like SMU being dishonest about why the prior coach was fired.

I know you and I differed about this when I jumped on the board back in April, but we all know that college athletics is a very dirty business. Like it or not, a lot of this stuff happens. And these coaches should know that when they sign up for it.
An example of the sleeziness in college athletics: Look at Dennis Erickson and how be basically made Idaho bend over for a year before moving on to Arizona State. That guy is scum.

Maybe I'm being selfish here, but I'm not even worried about Tubbs anymore. By all accounts, he's better off without the SMU gig. However, at the risk of being melodramatic, I feel that as a fan and alum I have been personally affronted by the way this was handled. My school has allowed, and even helped, it appear that a disgruntled alum was allowed to sandbag a coach he did not like. And then to come in front of the media and say we can't talk about it but its worse than the burgers and cheer reported in the paper, only to follow that profundity with perpetual silence, the whole thing leaves something to be desired.

I can reach no other conclusion than somebody recognized a mistake had been made in hiring Tubbs and it was corrected. We will never get a straight answer about what went down; who was the driving force behind it; or why it was done.

Why couldn't they have said, "We are not pleased with the current situation and have decided to hire another coach." Simple. No need to even give a reason other than they wanted to make a change. SMU has the right to make a change any time it wants. Why did SMU have to go off on some unbelievable tangent? It looks a lot worse than simply firing the guy because he wasn't meeting expectations. I like Doh very much but the way Tubbs was fired is going to hurt SMU in Dallas high schools for a long time.

Like I have speculated before, maybe they do not say anything because there is nothing good to say. You don't here Tubbs complaining which leads me to beleive that both parties agreed to just go away rather than air the dirty laundry.
I actually think the school is doing Tubbs a favor by not dragging him through the mud.
Would it have been better for Tubbs' future if the school were to say he was not getting the job done on any fronts and is not worthy of a head coach job??
Sometimes these things are better left unsaid for both parties.
