Reviewing Texas Football's top 300 list from last Summer, it looks like Derrius was at Arlington Grace Prep, which is the school they listed him at in the magazine. He made Best of the Rest with a forty time of 4.5.
this is from a DMN PRESEASON blogClass of 2007 breakdown: defensive backs
Here's the second installment on the Class of 2007. Today we highlight defensive backs: Top area defensive backs 1) Greg McCoy, Woodrow Wilson: McCoy follows teammate Sergio Kindle (Texas) as a top defensive prospect. In fact, when I saw Wylie and Woodrow play last fall in the playoffs, I thought McCoy was the best player on the field, with Kindle also out there. McCoy is fast and tough, important qualities for a shutdown corner. 2) Derrius Bell, Arlington Grace Prep: Bell is small at 5-9, 155 pounds, but he already has an offer from Baylor and is considering Nebraska, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Texas and UT-El Paso. He led Grace Prep to the TAPPS Class 5A state title. Bell is a transfer from Wilmer-Hutchins, where he had six intereceptions as a sophomore. 3) Larry Rosebud, North Mesquite: The brother of Lincoln standout Richetti Jones, Rosebud is a top prospect in his own right. He already has an offer from Florida and is high on Oklahoma State, Texas Tech and Texas A&M. He and Jones could be a package deal; they are making most of their spring visits together. 4) Tejay Johnson, South Garland: Johnson, a 6-0, 185-pound safety, has offers from Kansas State, Georgia Tech and Oklahoma State. He does an excellent job getting off of blocks and making tackles. The state's best: Tekerrian Cuba, Tyler Lee: The 6-2, 180-pound Cuba is a free safety who Texas A&M and Texas Tech are drooling over. He is fast, tall and a good tackler. He had 78 tackles, three forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries as a junior. He started as a sophomore for Tyler Lee's state title team. The nation's best: Gary Green, Columbia (S.C.) Richland Northeast: Green is expected to announce his decision today between the home state South Carolina Gamecocks and Notre Dame. He is athletic and his physical nature helps him play bigger than his 5-10, 170-pound frame suggests he would. Green has offers from several top programs, including Florida, Florida State, Tennessee and Michigan. This is a big test for the Gamecocks and second-year coach Steve Spurrier. Tim MacMahon says: The most impressive thing about McCoy and Bell is their ability to shut down receivers one-on-one. Both guys have the ability to change directions without slowing down, which is more important than pure speed for cornerbacks. They're also the best receivers for their high school teams, evidence of their playmaking ability. Their interception totals might not be high this season, because every throw in their direction is a chance for them to score. Please Sir may I have another?
Catching up with Bell CB Derrius Bell has decided where he'll spend his senior year of high school. Now, he can focus on picking a college. Bell is transferring at Hillcrest after starring for Arlington Grace Prep's TAPPS state championship team last season. He is reuniting with coach Mike Robinson, who coached Bell at Wilmer-Hutchins before the state shut down the school. Bell (5-10, 165), an excellent cover man who plays much bigger than his size, said he would probably commit immediately if Nebraska or Wisconsin offers him a scholarship. If not, he expects to wait until after the season to make a decision. TCU, Baylor, Colorado State, Tulsa and UTEP are among the schools that have offered Bell. He is also interested in SMU, which has been in contact with him but hasn't offered. UTEP has a built-in advantage with Bell. His brother, Dustin, is a redshirt freshman slot receiver for the Miners. If the reported 4.4 speed is correct, thats a nice combo for a CB. Hey, does anybody know if this guy was a punt returner in High School ?
Re: Derrius Bell Commits!
DMN says he returned 3 kickoffs and 1 punt for TDs this past year!
