SMU Women Defeat UTEP!!

Postby Tipoff96 » Sun Feb 25, 2007 12:15 am

HUGE win tonight by the ladies! They defeated a tough UTEP team who was 7-0 at home during conference play. Most importantly, they avoid meeting up with Tulsa (tourney host) in the Conference Tournament next week. Outstanding play by several players....a total team effort. This is a young team with LOADS of young talent. The Conference Tournament should be real interesting. Congrats and best of luck in the tournament next weekend!

That was the best night I've had at the Haskins Center in quite a while! (Wife went to UTEP, so I was sitting with some of our friends in orange. We go to several games a year with them, and they're cool, but they sure didn't like me much after the game.) Great win for the Ponies. Katie Cobb was awesome in the second half. She had one stretch where she seemed to do whatever she wanted with the ball - UTEP couldn't keep her from driving, she stuck her pull-up jumpers, and she was all over UTEP's guards defensively. Honestly, there were two or three times I thought she'd get hit with fouls - she was all over them - and the refs didn't call anything. Played all night like she had a chip on her shoulder, not like she had to shoot every shot or score every point, but I don't know .... we've all heard that phrase where a coach talks about a player who "refuses to lose" and that's exactly what Cobb looked like last night. She looked almost possessed. Speaking of people who are possessed, has Coach Rompola gotten mellower? I remember going to a few games when I was in school, and there were several times I thought she was going to punch a ref, but last night, even when we were getting beat in the first half, she seemed a little calmer. Not calmer - she was pissed at some players, I thought, but not as volatile, I guess. She coached her [deleted] off from tipoff to the final whistle, and I only saw her really glare at the refs a couple of times. The other players I was most impressed with last night were Dodds (of course) as she tangled with that EuroShaq-lookin' chick UTEP has in the middle, and Gilliam, who hit a couple of huge 3s - her shot looked totally effortless.

The paper here talks about the difference between the two halves, and they're right. But the thing I noticed was the difference in the body language. At the beginning of the game, they looked almost tentative. I don't know, maybe it was hangover from New Orleans (and come on, who among us hasn't used that as a very legitimate excuse before?) Maybe it was intimidation (can't imagine that, just guessing). But at the end of the game, our players just looked different. I know, winning helps, but several of them looked like the confidence was back, like they have a little swagger - keep the swagger and kick some butt in the conference tournament!

Mellower? I don't know, she's really intense in every game I've seen. Thanks for the report from El Paso!

Good win for the ladies, but someone said UTEP was without two starters, including their leading scorer.

You're right - UTEP was down two players. All the more reason that win was critical!

Oh I agree, we enjoy every precious win we get. But I still stick by my statement. SMU should DOMINATE this fartknocker conference!

Ah yes, the poetry of Beavis and Butthead.
Let me guess -- you were an English lit major?

We swept UTEP, and we should sweep UTEP. I don't care if they rolled their cheerleaders out there, we're still the ONLY conference team to roll into El Paso and come out with a win.

Congratulations, ladies! Kick some butt in the tournament.
