Coach Doherty's Radio Show

Postby Treadway21 » Mon Mar 12, 2007 10:27 am

Hey, is anyone going to Coach Doherty's radio show tonight?

I think Steve Orsini and Coach Bennett will be there. Maybe we can get the low down on the uniform change.

I'd rather hear who Coach Do is going to give the other two scholarships to.

Coach Doherty was out of town and called in by phone, and so the majority of the time was taken by Orsini who was there in person. I got there late as Doherty was winding down. He talked a lot about the S. Miss game and the tournament. There will be a more in dept post season show next week when Doherty is back.

Orsini talked about the progress that was made in the program. he said thateven though the record didn't improve as much as he hoped the RPI went up significantly which was one of the goals. Rich pointed out that SMU got a bonus for winning 75% of its non-conference games. I am not sure if the money came from the league or where. Orsini said that SMU need to becareful of how they schedule. The schedule should not be too hard or too easy, but the bottom line is winning. Orsini talked about the revenue generated from the NCAA tournament. The Tournament teams, or in this case Memphis get 40%, COnfernce USA gets 10%, and 40% is divided between the other schools.

He also talked about football. He said that he and Coach Bennett discussed 71 points of improvement and he said half have been addressed already. He didn't say what had or hadn't been addressed though. Rich asked him about the residual effects of the death penalty. Orsini said Turner and Copeland worked hard to change the policies after the death penalty and he sees further improvement to the team going foward. He was glad to get the results in wins, but was disappointed with coming "literally a yard short." He said that by addressing the 71 points we will not fall short again. He also said that while the football team is improving, we need more people in the stands. He believes we have a niche in the Dallas market.

He addressed the Mustang CLub. Evidently SMU was 10th out of 12 Conference USA teams in donations. Their goal this year was to improve by 20% and have 2 or 3 thousand donors (i forget the exact number)

He thank the Hunts, especially Clark for helping SMU secire the College Cup Soccer final four at Pizza Hut Park and for everything else they do for the school. And finally that we have a Women's basketball Regional in March that will be great for the school.

I am sure there are plenty of things I am missing, but at least this covers many of the points from the program. They do offer podcasts of the program over at the SMU Athletics website.

I found that to be interesting. 71 points of improvement? I'm sure we can all come up with a few of our own, but 71 is a pretty big number.

At the same time, how significant are these points if half of them can be resolved between January and March?

It's all in the details...The hammer was swung, I wonder about the gate?

Good times...if it works we can call this the "SMU Reformation" with Orsini playing Martin Luther.

So did Orsini just nail them on Bennett's desk one evening?

And did it start something like this?

1. Put large man in backfield. Run over people, creating space for slightly smaller man. Repeat.

I hope one of the 71 points is to make the first down and goal from the one yard line.

The RPI was published in the Dallas Morning News yesterday, we were #206. Last year we were #210.

Thanks X, I thought our "significant" RPI improvement wasn't much.
