Certainly there's no arguing with that logic.

I'm surprised what SMU did to Tubbs and its basketball fans in general sits well with a pk, PK.
You may very well be right jt, but I'm still waiting for the all knowing NCAA to produce thier report on the matter before I make a judgement. You on the other hand do not have to worry about ever being picked to be on a jury panel. ![]()
You ought to change your screen name to One Trick Pony. Burgers and Cheer, Burgers and Cheer, Burgers and Cheer. Get over it. Are we not in a better place now???
First, I have long believed that there are great players outside of Dallas. How many play for Georgetown? How many play for Florida? How many play for Louisville, Vanderbilt, Tennessee, Memphis? With UT, OU, A&M admitting anyone who can sign their name without wetting themselves, and probably having their rich alums donate tons to AAU programs (aka bribes) which we will not do, it is no wonder why we don't get Dallas recruits. I'll take good prep school kids any day. I'd take pretty much any starter off any top five team in the DC Catholic school league. And I'll bet those coaches know Doh from his days at Notre Dame and UNC. If we're blackballed in Dallas for Tide and Burgers, who cares, I don't.
JT, I think you are putting to much faith in what a high school coach can deliver. One of my best friends is a head football coach, I asked him how much say he has on where his kids will go. His response won't settle this arguement but he said one of his top recruits had offers to Alabama and then 2 mid-major type schools, he said there was nothing he could have done or said to make the kid not go to Bama, which is fine cuz thats where he should have gone, but point being, if a DISD kid is picking between SMU and Kansas, it doesn't matter how close the H.S. coach is to Tubbs the recruit is going to go to Kansas. jtstang--there are no "we can't recruit because of the morning news coverage" guys on this thread.
Local Players read the Local Newspaper and see the scores and the teams played and that hasn't been pretty the last few years. sometimes, they even come to games they can get to on the LOCAL rail system. Oh, God. To answer the question, "is anybody concerned that this recruiting class has ZERO recruits from the area"?: No. we would be concerned if the recruits signed and committed weren't div 1 talented (they appear to be) and we would be concerned if we were taking div2 talents from disd and trying to stretch them into div 1 players. our message to our "friends" in the disd coaching ranks should be: we are going to be recruiting more and more talented players, and if you have div 1 talented kids, we will be happy to consider them, but you don't owe us any and we don't owe you and the kids the disservice of taking the academically or physically unqualified.
Far and away the most sensible stance on the topic to date.
Amen brother...There are players outside of TX. And if we can get them to SMU we should be grateful. The provincial mindset of some of the posters on this board regarding recruiting baffles me.
Okay, I misunderstood what you were saying. My mistake. And I agree with you that one reason a non-local kid is more likely to come here is they are not really attuned to how bad it's been here for the last fifteen or so years.
I think this is actually a fantastic point. SMU's reputation in Texas for football and basketball is embarrassingly bad. People genuinely laugh at me when I bring up SMU sports because they feel its so irrelevant. When even Baylor fans can take shots at me about our sports and they are right, its a sad day. Of course that doesn't stop me from throwing in a few Baptist Bible beating, no dancing or drinking jokes back their way. ![]()
Yeah that what we need to do-tell those South Dallas Coaches that we don't need their academically unqualified students but we'd be "happy to consider" your Division 1A talent.
Care for some Grey Poupon Mortimer. Bring the car around James I'm late for my Tee-Time at the Country Club. Thank God Doherty is more diplomatic than some of YOU.
As far as Dallas recruiting, one day I hope we are there. Unfortunately, we are not at the point where the athletic program is attractive, only the location, education and campus are "pluses".
Our new "plus" is our coaching staff, that seems to know how to turn this thing around. We have got to get some traction going in one of our high profile sports. I personally don't care where the kids come from, just so they can make it here academically, have decent behavior off the court and can win. I also think that if you examine the backround of players for Duke, Kentucy, UNC, Illinois and Florida, I would bet that local "players" are not the majority of their starting lineups. Look at some of John Wooden's great teams, where did his players come from? I believe Kareem was from NYC. As far as Tubbs was concerned, what he did was wrong. An alumn gave him money outside the normal channels (Mustang Club, Athletic Director, etc.) at the coach's request to do certain legitimate things such as refurbish his office. Unfortunately, the money wasn't spent as both agreed and could not be accounted for. Both the alumn and the coach were wrong for going outside the system and both have had to pay, one way or another. Let's move on...
