BBall Scheduling

Postby smuZilla » Sun May 20, 2007 9:30 pm

Anyone heard of any big games for the upcoming year? I would think most would love to play in Dallas to get DISD exposure since this is a strong metro recruiting area. If no BCS schools are interested, we could very easily schedule home & home series against some very good mid-majors to boost attendance and get the attention of the DISD recruits. Bring on a Wichita State, or a Southern Illinois, or a Creighton. We're out-recruiting them anyway so we might as well beat 'em on the court too!

We have the return game to Dayton.

TCU is coming to our place.

We are also starting a home-and-home with Colorado. Not a 2-for-1. We go to Boulder this year. They come to Dallas in 2008-09.

Other than that, not much else is known.

As for CUSA, it looks as if we have the same schedule like we had for 2006-07.

I would think quite a bit is known. They just haven't shared the details publicly. Rest assured, the schedule is either done or they are applying the finishing touches as quickly as possible.

Based on Coach Doh preference to schedule Memphis and Houston home and home, I am thinking he will want to further improve the BB schedule with stronger competition. He feels these efforts will only strengthen the team over time.

To be the best, you play and beat the best!

But as any mid major school knows, the big dogs tend to stay away from traps like away games. Note Kentucky is going to buy out their date at U Mass this year to replace it with a home game against a stiff. If we play premier programs it will likely be a one and done thing away (payday game) unless they want to play in Dallas for recruiting or alumni reasons. The only schools that would think about that are Big XII in all likelihood.

I wonder if it could work out the way women's teams do it. Tennessee, for instance, played at TCU because of two metroplex recruits they have. If coach Doh loses out on a DISD five-star type to, say, Georgia Tech, Cincinnatti or UConn (all of whom have had success with Texas players), pitch a return trip to Dallas to those schools, telling them it'll make their new recruits happy. Hell, big Hoosier booster Mark Cuban probably would've helped swing somethin like that when Bracey Wright went to Indiana.

That reminds me....Deron Williams talk is everywhere. Where's Bracey these days?

FYI, Illinois recruits Texas heavily.

You're right. That was all I had heard from talking with Matt a couple of weeks ago.

If they are on the schedule, I like the Colorado home and home. For us certainly something fresh and exciting a Big 12 team not named Baylor, and it's not a huge reach game for us. Good exposure, nice trip to ski country, etc.

Keep in mind, the Buffaloes have a new coach -- Air Force's coach -- and will be running that Princeton style offense: back door cuts on the baseline and 3-pointers.

Memphis and UH conference games. Why would Coach have a say in how they are scheduled? Conference games are home and home in a season. Am I missing something?

From Coach's blog back in October:

At our C-USA Spring meetings the conference announced they were going to expand league play by two games. They asked us who we wanted to play and I said I wanted to play Memphis and Houston as we were only playing them one time a year at this point. Since they were picked #1 and #2 respectively in the preseason polls you may think I wished I didn't do that. To the contrary.

To be the best you have to beat the best and the only way to beat em is to schedule them. Plus, I think the fans in Moody deserve to see Memphis and Houston play each year. Memphis is a national power and Houston is an old Southwest Conference rival

As I said, I really would be surprised if any powerhouse teams from the BE or ACC scheduled in Dallas absent a Bracey Wright payback situation. We might get a Big Ten team here or there like Illinois or Iowa. Our best chance is with Big XII teams since they all recruit to some degree in Texas. Kansas, Mizzou, K State, OSU, OU, Nebraska, Colorado and Iowa State might like to showcase in Dallas. LSU and Arkansas would be the two SEC schools that might do a 1-1 series to get into Dallas. However, this is a two-edged sword for us, because if they come to Dallas and kick our butts, then it makes it that much harder for us to recruit in Dallas. If we can pull an upset, then it might be worth it.

Well regardless of the schedule, I think the recruits are going to be very interesting to watch as they learn what D1 is all about. I would still like to see some quality mid-majors if the big boys won't show. Moody is still a very cool place to play - kind of like a Wrigley/Fenway of NCAA bball! The scoreboard is massive and the band last season actually started playing songs that weren't written before 1980. I think things are definitely improving.
