Called "one of the top DT prospects in the Lone Star State" by scout.com, Theo Goins (6-4, 285) of Fort Bend (Hightower) says SMU is one of three schools (along with Central Florida and McNeese State) to offer a scholarship.
Reports the following stats from his junior year: "37 tackles, 11 TFLs, 6 sacks, 60+ pressures, 4-5 QB knockdowns, 2 tipped passes, 6 FFs and 2 FRs." Says he doesn't know a whole lot about SMU yet, but is going to camp at SMU (was supposed to be at SMU June 8).
Commitment Time Frame: "I'm going to wait until I take all of my official visits first."
Weight Room Numbers: "295 Bench, 220 Incline, 335 Squat, 270 Power Clean."

Plenty of stories out there of quality college players who were offered by podunk schools except for one. And when the one got there, he became a great player.
Relax.

Right you are, George S.
Here are the other offers extended to some recent SMU players:
Kenard Burley: Louisiana Tech, Baylor, Stephen F. Austin
Caleb Peveto: Vanderbilt
Blake Warren: Louisiana-Monroe
Brandon Bonds: Central Arkansas
Wilton McCray: Louisiana-Lafayette
Don't remember who offered Justin Rogers, but I'd say he panned out OK, wouldn't you?
I'd take a few more like those guys. Doesn't matter who offers them.

The thing I would question is why does "one of the top DT prospects in the Lone Star State" only have offers from those schools. You would think interest would be a little higher. That is no personal slam on his talent or potential, but I would think one of the top DTs would at least get a sniff from someone a little higher on the food chain.

That "one of the top DT prospects" label is the opinion of the writer or of the editor of the site who is trying to sell subscriptions. However, he might well be a very talented guy, since the size is there, and he reports several more schools -- including LSU -- are "closing in." Whether they offer remains to be seen, but at least he is getting attention from some real college football heavyweights.

I'm not worried about McNeese State. With all due respect, there are two reasons someone would choose McNeese State over SMU if he is recruited by both:
• Family/friend connections
• Didn't get in to SMU or major academic concerns
I know - sounds elitist, and that's not my intent. But there's no comparison academically, or in terms of conference/competition, or in terms of location. I know nothing about this kid, and don't know how good a player or student he is. We might lose him to any number of schools, or we might end up with him. But we're not losing him to McNeese for any reason other than those two.
With all that said, if he can play, I sure hope we get him. Need some more big bodies in the middle of the defensive line.

Some of their past choices are certainly questionable. Again, I'm not knocking this guy either. He maybe the Best DL in the state for all I know but remember last year Scout picked a guy from a Houston private school as the # 14 DL in the country of something like that. I don't think that guy got a Div. 1 scholarship. So Scout must sometimes just look at a guys film and does properly evaluate what high school level the guy plays at.
