The Daily Campus has this 'exclusive' interview with Slater:

http://media.www.smudailycampus.com/med ... 6917.shtml

Quarterback Corey Slater left the SMU football team this week citing competition at quarterback as his main reason for leaving. The Seattle native plans to head back to Washington this week.

Slater said both he and the other quarterback, Justin Willis, are good and he doesn't think it's best for him to stay at SMU.

"I've talked with most of the coaches and it doesn't make sense for me to stay here with the quarterback situation being what it is," said Slater, "It's a hard position to be in."

The quarterback's exit comes just a week after SMU linebacker Reggie Carrington announced he was leaving the Mustangs as well.

Slater has been thinking about leaving the team for a while, he said, and believes there is still enough time for him to go somewhere else. Slater would be a junior in the fall and eligible for two more years of playing time.

Slater said he has nothing against the coaches and he is not trying to burn any bridges but leaving is something he feels he needs to do. The quarterback said he does not want to look back 10 or 15 years from now and have regrets.

"I could be making a big mistake," said Slater, "But I've made some pretty good choices so far."

The quarterback has already been in contact with a few colleges including Montana State, Washington State and Boise State, but the 20-year-old has not made any decisions. Slater said the northwest has a lot of big and small schools and he feels there is a lot more opportunity up there for him.

"I just want to play football," said Slater.

Slater saw playing time in six games in 2006 and started against UTEP and Marshall. Slater played the entire game in El Paso after Willis was suspended due to a violation of team rules.

Prior to joining the Mustangs Slater played football at Dixie State Junior College.

Shouldn't have doubted expony; I should know better by now.

Regardless, this is a shame to see him go. Good luck in life, Corey.

Eh. He's a Jr. with two years left... he still has a chance to find someplace else to stick. He wasn't going to unseat a healthy Willis, so maybe he was waiting around to see what happened with Justin's wrist? I don't know.

His leaving is a damn shame for the team, but if he believes he can start at this level, he really has to leave to find that out. Though I hate to break it to him, there are Justin Willises all over the country.

So now the real question is "How is Zach's Shoulder?" I really don't think this team wants to bring Logan Turner up without a redshirt year. Who else can be shoved into the #3 spot, or even the #2 spot now?

Maybe he has seen the benefit of dropping down a division like Josh McCown did. Hard to see him becoming an NFL QB had he stayed at SMU.......
Well, don't expect to see him at Sam Houston State. The Bearkats have Rhett Bomar at least thru 2009. :D

plus I'm under the impression that some schools are now or should be making it harder to get a release unless you finish the semester in good standing so it will not affect the school's APR-any comments?

He left Dixie as they were transitioning from a JuCo to a four-year D2 school. Since he was under the impression that Neuheisel was hot to trot for him while still at UW, he didn't figure he was a D2 type qb.

I'm pretty sure corey always knew he was only going to stay in dixie for a year, he never did plan on staying for any longer than that.
Zach's arm will no doubt continue to give him problems; I wonder if he will stick it out here as well, he's not very happy here from what I've heard? Logan Turner has a good strong arm but likewise, I doubt he needs to start out as a true freshman...
