Take a tip from the currents, once in a while things change. This is one of them.

SMU started recruiting students from Orange County in the early 90s when Pye hired USC's former student recruiter from Orange County. Before that, SMU only had a full time recruiter in Los Angeles who focused his efforts on the private High Schools in LA. Since the early 90s the amount of kids from Orange County attending SMU has skyrocked. Before that, there where literally one or two kids from that area attending SMU.
And Tim Lewis recruited a kid out of Newport Harbor in 92 named Coluccio who never played due to injury.

My parentls lived in Newport Beach during WWII, they loved it. Welcome to SMU. I guess with Title IX, there are fewer and fewer wrestling opportunities at U.S. colleges.

USC's campus is nice (but not as impressive as SMU's). Big issue is location in LA.
My daughter was accepted to grad school at USC and UT Austin. She quickly accepted USC and rejected UT. However, our trip to LA to see the school and look for apartments was a real eye opener. Within two days, she called UT and asked them, if they would still take her. Good news is they did and she loves Austin and Texas.
I don't expect to ever see her live in Chicago again.
BTW, I agree with OC's take on the appeal of SMU and Dallas. Remember, southern California HS students lack an option like USC (which is overly competitive for the many who apply.) That is why you see so many CA kids in Arizona and Colorado. Even San Diego kids are showing up at SMU.

If SMU's appeal is the school, then why did you limit your statement to just California kids? "SMU is very attractive to kids from California." Seems to me that you could say that about Iowa kids just as well.

For Iowa kids you just have to build it. If you do, they will come.

Perhaps Ford Stadium will become our "Field of Dreams"?
And don't forget than Hayden Fry went to Iowa City and revitialized that program.

Hayden Fry was the head coach at Iowa, not Iowa State.
"It'd be nice to see Jesse Henderson break one here."

My statement was a direct response to mrydel's question about why this young man from California is coming to SMU. SMU is an attractive school to kids from all over the world.

94, you disappointed me. I thought you'd use that as another opportunity to call me Lamont Cranston.

Correct, Hayden turned the Hawkeyes into a Big Ten Power, going to bowl games regularly.

SMU and USC are very similar as far as the social make-up of the student body (affluence, significance of the greek system, etc). My folks are big 'SC donors (probably the reason I got accepted) so I grew up attending USC football games every week. But the fact is, a lot of the students who don't get accepted to SC usually end up at SMU. I knew several kids who were originally rejected and ended up transferring back to USC after a year or two in Dallas.
Orange County itself is a large draw for SMU, but they recruit the entire state heavily, including San Diego and NorCal. Rick Diaz is the West Coast recruiter for SMU and he travels out here to interview as many candidates as possible. For me, I chose SMU because of the atmosphere and locale, the type of school it was, with DI athletics, and to get the hell out of the bubble that is Orange County. A 45 minute drive up to LA just wasn't enough.
BTW, Newport Harbor's football program isn't that great, especially in comparison to Santa Margarita, Servite or Mater Dei (private schools) or Los Alamitos HS and Long Beach Poly. Waterpolo and surfing, on the other hand, they dominate pretty regularly.
GO MUSTANGS!
FIGHT ON!
