My two cents...

Postby OC Mustang » Sun Sep 16, 2007 10:59 am

...'cause that's about all my comments are worth. But since this is a fan forum...

...It is my humble opinion that we let the season play out. Bennett either puts up 7 wins and a bowl or he is gone. This loss seems as frustrating as the UNT loss last year. We are certainly no better than last year. However, per record, we are no worse either...at least at the same point in the season.

And that's it. No more frustration...at least no more than usual. The TCU is a must win (regardless of our chances). They are damaged goods right now too. The test will be whether Bennett can get this team up for that game, and furthermore, whether the whole team can reach down deep for a little extra.

I guess sitting here at this computer having listened to most of the game, I am sick and tired of being sick and tired.

So that's it. Come on, SMU. Play hard and win.

What sux about losing Bennett is the 6 year investment in him. I like it when a Marshall native does well, but as I told a lady in Rotary whose husband follows the Mustangs to EVERY game with Bennett & Co., this simply can not go on...good man or not. And he is a good man...and SMU was a happy ending to a rough part of his life. But if he is unable to pull this season out of the doldrums, it is time. He knows that. He has done well...gotten his children out of arguably the best public school system in the state, if not country (HPISD), lived rather well considering his job, maybe put back a little dough. He can go coach a smaller school or defensive coordinator somewhere, maybe jump up to the pros with his contacts.

Or maybe he can right this ship and carry on.

We shall see.

problem is: you let the season play out, we lost 8 games, then you fire bennett = less coaching choices and you lose a year of legitimate recruiting efforts....

It's not going to surprise PB when he is let go at the end of the season. He might be a little surprised if Orsini cuts him loose before then. Either way, he knows this is the money year. He said so himself before the season started that this year is the year everything must come together. It's obvious we're not meeting his expectations (or anyone else's for that matter). We all say he's a good guy and I agree he is. I wonder this...will he want a buyout of his contract or will he void the remaining years? If he is the stand up guy we all think he is he should willingly void the remaining years on his contract due to his failure to even get close to achieving his stated goals, especially considering we extended his contract when he just as easily could have been fired.

it's severance pay; routinely negotiated in coaching contracts. Most coaches know they are "hired to be fired". Pretty rare for a guy to leave on his own terms these days.

Is what it is. If you do away with PB right now, you have essentially given up on the season before he has. Nevermind the employer-employee issues, as long as the numeric results of a seasons worth of games play out to 7 wins and a bowl, thing the team and PB are in this until we reach 1-5 at the worst.

I say let him finish. Next year's squad is probably solid anyway...what with the youth on this team on both sides of ball. Whether it's PB coaching or a new guy, the situation next year is better on paper.

So again, let them play on, play hard, and win. It may not be the best situation you or I were hoping for, but until Orsini steps in, this one is PB and this team's season.

Fix the D, right the ship, and win. And then we let the chips fall after the season.
