Where do the coaches wind up?While I was in favor of getting rid of Bennett after last season, I am not saying that I believe it is a foregone conclusion that he will lose his job this year. I'm just curious, though, where do you think Bennett and his coaching staff would go from here?
I imagine Bennett would wind up as a DC somewhere at a mid to lower end BCS school. Where in the world would Rusty Offense wind up, though? Would any D-1A school take that guy as an OC? Geaux MUSTANGS! Geaux Tigers!
Wouldn't be surprised to see Bennett at Tech or A&M next year as a Defensive Coordinator. You guys are way off on Burns-he will easily find other employment and has done a decent job with limited talent. He doesn't have the players he needs to make this thing work any better than it is.
C'mon Stallion, I don't doubt either that he will "find other employment." (I don't expect him to be homeless and begging for change.) Where do you see him? NO WAY he gets another D-1A gig as OC. I disagree that the guy has done a decent job. If anything, he's done a below average job. Part of a college coach's job is to teach and to figure out how to maximize strengths. He doesn't seem to be successful at either. I put many of our offensive blunders over the last few years on his shoulders. Geaux MUSTANGS! Geaux Tigers!
Thank you Stallion for showing us the problem really is coaching. All good D1 coaches create a system that fits their talent. If they don't have the talent, they modify a system to fit until they acquire the talent. We haven't done either. We don't have the talent to run the spread offense? Then why do we run it? THIS IS COACHING. Period. Paragraph. If Burns won't change to fit the talent, then shame on Bennett. It is his job as HC. If Bennett won't change to fit the talent, then shame on Bennett. Just send 'da money.
No actually the good coaches go out and recruit the best talent to run their offense. One of the most incorrect over used statements by misinformed fans that always appears after losses. Coaches have systems and generally stick with them.
I didn't say you scrap the system. I said you modify the system to fit your talent. Whether you simplify formations, plays or the entire play book, the system has to be modified to fit your talent level.
Just send 'da money.
Wrong on this one Stallion - there is not time at a school like SMU to recruit to your sysytem when it takes three yrs for the recruited talent to show up on the field. If you have a decent line, (so-so but probably a check) a big talented TE (check) and a big pro style back (check) you dont run the Curly Shuffle (i.e. the "pistol"). Burns should adapt to what he has - or at least mix in some formations that play to their strengths = especially when his job and Bennett's depends on it. Any high school coach would do that - and his stubborness will cost us a bowl this year and cost him his employment.
Bennett has been constricting the OC every since he got here.. Edmondson and Burns..
How do I know this, Edmonson's off averaged 450 + yds when he was at La Monroe or Lafeyette, can't remember which one, but i know it was a LA school. Burns won the Conf USA w/ Cincy and Gino GUIDUGLI was dominant during his time at cincy w/ Rusty Burns. His offense was known as a "fast break" and "basketball on the football field" type offense.
Guess he and Leach have 'kissed and made up' after that little tussle a couple of years ago at Ford. ![]()
