He maybe a nice guy. But WTF!!!
The Asterisk comment was in response to being asked if this loss was espeicially painful. He's just saying that it hurt more since there were so many missed chances to win the thing.

Not quite yet...it may have been a nail, but the coffin isn't closed until after the losses are enough in number to rule out a bowl.

He won't point fingers at other units, just feels that he and his mohawk buds should have played better. I applaud you Ben. -->Here's the Daily Campus story<--
Shut the [deleted] up! The OLine played great. No one else wanted to talk to the media, so Ben just said whatever. The Defense sucked!! Someone needs to tell them, and it sounds better coming from a team catain. Ben needs to grow some nuts.

Not a rant, just tired of reading posts from people who know nothing about football and less about having some balls!

What makes you think that the team isn't addressing the defensive problems? Ben did the right thing by not publicly insulting the defense. You just don't go in front of a reporter and lash your team. You address your team's problems and mistakes behind closed doors, at practice, or on the sideline. Lashing your teammates splinters the team and destroys the fraternal atmosphere that the team creates, so shut your yap.

But treating the suporters and former players like idiots is even worse. Everyone seen what happened and the score showed it. How can you sugar coat that [deleted]. We scored 45 points, that should win every game!! Someone has to be accountable, this is their job. Perform like that on your job for a month and see what happens??

I think you like arguing just for the sake of arguing. No one is denying the fact that the defense played awful. I'll admit it. I sat there and watched as we gift-wrapped the game for UTEP. I'm saying it is NOT Ben's place to degrade the defense, as you seem to want him to have done. I'm glad Ben could bite his tongue and keep from lashing at his teammates in the public eye, that shows class and maturity beyond his years.

That is not what I am saying at all. The OL played great and Ben did not say that either. He should have done want the other captains done. Not say anthing to anyone. We seen what happened. He made himself look stupid! And I do not like arguing! I just call it like I see it. Some of the players needs some media lessons?

Ben. P is a class act. Ben is articulate, classy & very bright. Wish we had 84 more just like him (although I will say that we are close).

Seriously, there are no easy answers at this point. The talent level on defense is simply not there. Why start pointing fingers when I really don't think its an issue of not trying. The answers should have come in February 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007. BTW as I posted after the game-the offense line did play well. ZERO Sacks-not sure anybody has pointed that out.

No pointing fingers! Call it like it is, or, say nothing. It makes everyone look stupid. Blocking and tackling, it is about attitude.

Perhaps the article makes him look stupid, but in context, his comments were right on. He was specifically refering to SMU first down, 5 minutes left in regulation. The O-Line was essentially asked to win the game then and there. 3 straight Mapps Runs for 8 total yards. Every player should want the responsibility when the game is on the line, and felt that Ben and the O-line were given that responsibility and were upset with how they handled it. No matter how awesome thier overall performance was, they came up short when it mattered most.

Not only were his comments the right thing to say, but what he DIDN'T say also was right. Whether he feels the defense was great or horrible doesn't matter - you don't come out and trash teammates in the media. Ben Poynter is extremely bright (already has his degree) and is as high-character a guy as there is. I'm certain there were plenty of players who didn't want to talk, but I also bet there were some athletic PR guys who hand-pick who speaks and who doesn't. Poynter is one of those guys who you know will represent the team and the university with dignity and class whether the team wins or loses. These quotes get read by recruits and their parents, too, and high school coaches, so you can't have players coming out and saying "I did my job but the other guys didn't." If that's how they feel, they can talk about it at practice or in the locker room. I hope Ben Poynter stays around as an alum for a long time as an example of the kind of man and kind of player all Mustangs should aspire to be.
