SUPPORT FOR THE PLAYERS

This is the forum for talk about SMU Football

Poynter again; I am not going to be a "regular" on here as I think it is inappropriate to do so while my son is playing. But I must say I am touched by "Swamp Gas" coming to SMU tomorrow to CHEER on the MUSTANGS at the Chapel and the game. Also, thanks to all in advance who will be there Saturday. I cannot express how much it would mean to the players to exit the Chapel and find a decent sized, enthusiastic group of Mustang Fans awaiting them. Our "Mustang Football Families" space on the Boulevard is # 5 which is down on the south end. After you cheer for them at Perkins, please stop by and say hello and tell a parent, if you feel that way, how much you appreciate their son's commitment to SMU!

Great post, I just think everyone on here is super frustrated.

In addition, as I've said before, most of us are successful alums and are used to being able to control situations within our departments or companies. I would say most of it is a knock on SMU administration, coaching, etc. Nothing against the players as we know they are trying the best they can.

I did start the Willis post I realize - I wanted discussion on the diff. between this yr and last.

Are the donations that many of us make to the Mustang Club used to pay for the players scholarships?

Going on 20+ years now. Whatever is > super frustrated, most of us are there. It is refreshing to hear from a parent's perspective once in a while. We need more JP's.

Should the word "super" (as in "super frustrated")really be used as an adjective in the 21st Century???

Without doubt, I am quite proud of any Student/Athlete who plays 4/5 years and finishes their degrees. I tried it, and could only play a sport for a year...it is certainly more difficult than most people will ever know.

Our graduation rate is quite impressive and PB and all coaches should be complimented for the results.

Go Ponies!

Thank you for the post, Jim. I echo the comment that most on this board are not upset with the players. They put their heart and soul on the line every week. It would be easy to give up and our players haven't. I think many of the folks on the board are frustrated that our players haven't been given a chance to succeed, through no fault of their own.

What does that have to do with anything?

Don't know if I'll be able to make it to Perkins to cheer the team on as they leave for the stadium. But I'll be at Ford Stadium Saturday night.
GO MUSTANGS!

I understand your frustration with some posters on this board, me included. It is merely my opinion, which means nothing. I want to make a couple of points. The athletes a fair game to the public, which 90% of the public have never taken a snap or blocked/tackled anyone, other than their 6 year old son/daughter. The number of starts you are talking about hardly ever happens, because those players are usually at the next level playing after 24 or so consecutive starts. We are SMU and if anyone expects anything different, I have swamp land for sale in West Texas for $5000.00 and acre. WE HAVE STUDENT ATHLETES, NOT ATHLETES BEING STUDENTS!

Most of the time I speak in the third person for Darth as a joke and to gig the Kool-aid drinkers on this board. I want to express to you that I deeply appreciate the blood, sweat, and tears that the players exhibit on and off the field. I don't believe that I have ever criticized and individual player as they are student/athletes trying their best.

With that said, I and others on this board attempt to use humor (sometimes very failed bits) to deal with disaster that we are witnessing at this moment. I believe that most of my (and my cohorts) pot shots have been at PB and his minions. Although Stallion has a point about "the model," I have always said that I am not expecting a national championship -- only a conference title in one of the weakest conferences in the country. I disagree with those who argue talent in CUSA. From my perspective we are just as strong, fast, and as big as most of opponents in CUSA. To me at least this comes down to coaching. Therefore the dagger thrusts are at PB and company NOT THE PLAYERS.

As always Darth will be in his seat at this game, rooting for the ponies, and cheering for the team. At some point reality has to sink in....PB has got to go....

I have no frustration whatsoever with any of our players and their effort. I am proud of all of them and their service to SMU is greatly appreciated.

Mr Poynter, I also wanted to say that anyone who knows your son or knows about your son Ben, realizes what a class young man and good football player he is. As a Captain of this team, I know how tough this season has been for him to this point. But be assured, we are all proud of Ben and the job he is doing and thankful he came to SMU.
