I told you so. I told you we should have hired Charlie Waters. I know that Bennett is a nice guy and came highly recommended. But hiring him was not the right decision. We were better off with (gasp!) Cavin. I feel sorry for the players and sorry for all of us alums. This is just embarassing as hell. Shame on you, Copeland, for getting us in this mess.

How did Lou Holtz do his first year at South Carolina (hint: there was a goose egg in the win column) before he got his own players in there?
These players haven't quit - I talked to a couple after the game. They're eager to get to work on San Jose. I, for one, am never going to give up on this team, its coaches or my alma mater.

Lou Holtz went to the Citrus Bowl in his second season. The only bowl Bennet is going to is the toilet bowl and he is taking SMU with him.

I'm with you, Otto. I hate losing more than anything, but I believe wholeheartedly in Coach Bennett and his staff, and the players.
The drive home sure seemed long. But things will get better - soon.

Wasn't it Lou Holz that said: "I'll beat you with your team"? Or was it Bear Bryant? At any rate, there is something to be said about coaching, no matter what the talent level. The trick is to find the best each kid is good at and use that talent as much as possible. I feel that Bennett has the capacity to be prejudgemental and not allow the right kid to do the right job.

I know it was John Madden that said "I will take heart over talent any day".

That being said, there are some noted exceptions, but overall, it seems the ponies lack heart. Now I don't want to kick them when they are down, I am just looking for reasons we have lost three close games. Two were blow outs, but the other three games total an 8 point deficit. Heart is the only difference in games that close.

Baylor beat Colorado and TT beat T$M handily. So we should have lost those games - heart would not have been enough.

I will not blame the offensive or defensive schemes, or Bennet's relationship with the public and press, but as a motivator, he doesn't look good at first glance.

Right on ProudPonyPa. These players give up at the first sign of trouble it seems. It's not their fault. I would get angry and down too if I had blown leads to Baylor and UTEP.

Bennett is a talker.
He needs to realize that fans are fed up with losing.

I remember the players fighting for every yard in Cavan's last game against North Carolina. Cavan's teams lacked talent, but good god they had heart, and sometimes it simply comes down to who wants it more.

Obviously, our players are busting their tails, but they're buying into a system thats not helping them win games right now.

This game should have been a huge warning flag for everyone. It didn't matter how much we would have won by. Winning gains confidence, not blowouts. We've lost 3 close games and now the players, whether they know it or not, are going to start doubting themselves when things get tough.

I can't believe you people are already to fire a man that has brought a little excitement back to the Hilltop. He has only been at SMU for a year. Why don't you give him some time to recruit his own players and teach them his system. It is obvious everyone wants miracles to happen, and I would like to see SMU succeed as well. However, am I the only one that understands that it takes time to build a winning team? If Bennett has not gotten better within the next three years, then I would understand some of the "Fire Bennett" talk. But until then, show your support for SMU by either going to the game or donating some money to the Mustang Club. Either way, you will be helping Bennett build a winning program.

bennett is just a bad coach,a good recruiter,although I think he has been given way to much credit given the fact that he is operating with no restrictions. But he is a control freak and a bad coach. If you disagree please tell me what he has done on gameday to convince you that he is a good coach.

he hasn't been blown out in any of the games that were supposed to be close. he beat la tech last year at homecoming, finished the season strong last year, and is trying to change the culture of losing. what exactly have you done as a fan to help SMU?

What exactly is "his system?" An exceptional team in 3-4 years once he has 100% Bennett recruits? Yeah, right. There should be obvious gains taking place on the field right now. "Baby steps" (as Bennett mentioned in his recent interview) would be nice. A little tough love for Bennett is completely acceptable at this point in the game.

GURU, you're a welcome voice of reason. Someone on this board wrote that "Rome wasn't built in a day" - good point. Anyone who thinks any coach - Bobby Bowden, Pete Carroll, Bob Stoops - could have come in and built a winner in a year is delusional.

And not as to flame anyone, but UNF, do you go to the games? That team last night did not look like a team that gave up. Lost the game? Yup. Made mistakes? You bet. But gave up? No way - not even close.
