That 6-6 SeasonThat some use as proof that we 'had the talent' / 'turned the corner' / were 'bowl worthy'...
Came against the following opponents per Sagarin Loss to TTech - ranked #36 Loss to NTSU - ranked #148 Win over Sam Houston State - ranked #174 Win over Ark State - ranked #115 Win over Tulane - ranked #116 Loss to UTEP - ranked #103 Win over Marshall - ranked #102 Loss to ECU - ranked #67 Win over UAB - ranked #103 Loss to Houston - ranked #54 Win over Tulsa - ranked #65 Loss to Rice - ranked #88 Take out Texas Tech and Houston, and we had 10 opponents with an average Sagarin rating of ~110, yet we couldn't get the job done. Hardly a sign of 'improvement' IMO
This is what I have been saying all along. We should have won a MINIMUM 9 games last year, probably 10. Hopefully it will be a blessing in disguise as we get a sweet coaching hire done that wouldnt have happened last year.
since joining C-USA when have we played a tough schedule?? beat who you have on your schedule, easier said than done, but that is all you can do!
Sports, and all that implies.
Again, we should have beat UNT, UTEP (didnt play willis), Houston, and Rice. I think that goes from 6-6 to 10-2. There is NO doubt we should have won at least 3 of those.
Playing in CUSA we're lucky if we ever meet a program +75...so what?...win 7 games against the opponents you schedule, go to a bowl. Pretty simple formula. That is what Bennett promised us/said he could do last year and this year.
A lot you point to Bennett's last statements and proclaim "SEE!?! SEE!?! SMU can't get the athletes we need because we don't have the majors they want!" Why don't you also acknowledge with equal weight what Bennett said/felt about having everything he needed, including academic facilities and players, to take SMU to a bowl game. We can blame talent as the major obstacle preventing us from being able to beat Big 12 teams...but the Rice game?!? UTEP?!? Coaching debacles, my friend, are what has kept SMU from reaching its program goals the last 2-4 years.
Hey - all time best talent grader, personal bell ringer, and monday morning QB. Nice prediction for this year: 6-6??? You rule.
Unlucky for him because Orsini agreed with him that he did have everything he needed and that's why he doesn't have a job. He would've been MUCH better off saying "You know Steve, I didn't understand how hard this task would be when I got here. I AM the right guy for the job but I need X, Y and Z to happen before we can honestly compete for a bowl win. Get me those and in two seasons I'll turn this around." A good reminder that honesty is the best policy, especially when you are in the middle of a "hopeless" losing situation.
Everybody absolutely LOVES your posts. They aren't redundant at all! From what I've seen, I'm one of the few on here that thinks that all that was preventing us from a bowl win was a new HC who knew basic Xs and Os. That's called diversity of opinion and one day or another you might have be faced with/be forced to accept it in the world you live in. If Bennett is a liar about having everything he needed, you are picking and choosing only quotes that feed what you want to hear if you believe that majors offered is the main factor for SMU not meeting its program goals. The reality is probably somewhere in between but leaning toward the coaching issue.
