what I really want for Christmas...

Postby peruna81 » Sun Nov 11, 2007 9:38 pm

This morning at church the sermon dealt with the coming season of Advent, not a particularly well-discussed subject among us Southern Baptists but one that stirred the interest of several youngsters who immediately talked to me after the worship service about what they wanted for Christmas. There were the usual things, bikes( motorized ), a few old-school Barbie requests, and the generic puppy wanted by a four year old girl with amazing hazel eyes...while cute, these responses have worked on me all day, and I come to you, the Mustang Nation...er..Province with a list that I believe in part we may all desire, and would fill the wants of this 49 year-old to a T:

I want a sneaky, Hayden Fry-type coach.
Kind of like Lou Holtz use to be when he was at Arkansas...someone that had the brains and chutzpah to carry off schemes that make his team a threat to steal a game against a superior opponent...these guys are out there...and may be found much as Fry was by SMU.

I want SMU to become a question mark on opponent's schedules.
Kind of like what Tech has become in the Big 12...a known commodity that will demand others to play their best or be outscored/beaten.

I want to see Stallion giddy again, like after the TCU game a couple of years ago.
Look in the archive at his post-game posts...he was positively un-lawyer-like in his joy...just blissful, happy 'giddyness'...he deserves this...we deserve this...there was no fussing about Rivals numbers, or even the 'model'...speaking of that,

I want Stallion to get his model(s).
One would look like Eva Green....the other would look like Notre Dame, or at worst be a TCU-type...the two are not to be confused...by the way, you want to catch Stallion's post count, get him his model(s)...you won't hear from him for a while, and some of you folks with post-envy will get your shot.

I want white helmets with a red Mustang on 'em...there, I said it and I feel so much better.
My aging eyes do so much better with contrasts rather than nuance...red ponies on dark blue helmets get harder and harder to see....for the sake of the elderly, bring them back.

I want to have players that opponent's fans ask 'why couldn't our school recruit that kid ?'
See model discussions here at Ponyfans ad infinitum...

I want the Knuckleheads to cut a CD with 'Owen Wilson' and 'Pony UP' on it, and have it sold at Ford on game days
I'd buy one of those things just to confuse the responders from TCU on Youtube...IT IS AN IRONY-FILLED DIDDY, FROGS...NOT TO CONFUSED WITH REALITY...sheesh.

I want to see SMU gear available to be sold in Metroplex and Texas stores alongside 'Horn, Aggie, and Frog gear.
I know that it is a market-driven request, based on demand and linked to success on the field/court...we have the most creative and recognizable logo ( thanks to a car ) in America, and it is marketed/distributed like it is a soiled diaper...finding an SMU windbreaker online requires you to hire a computer whiz from Bangladesh to even get a hit ( no offense to our resident Bangladeshis...wonderful folks, and talented on them thar 'puters )...this isn't a difficult thing for the powers to be to fix, whomever 'they' are...

Finally, I want SMU tickets to games to be a desired commodity again
I live in the mouth of the beast, College Station, Texas...the A&M Cult deliver unbelievers like me tickets to football and basketball games that are coveted, even by folks with no ties to the Aggies. I am jealous...I want that for SMU again, and am just old enough to remember relevance in SMU football ('63-'66) when those tickets were precious to my dad and others, and when I was a student and the Mustang Mania craze put SMU back on the Dallas ( and nation's ) radar.

I now look forward to Christmas for things far more significant than what is under the tree for me...but I would love to wake up on some September morn and see these things wrapped up high on a Hilltop in Big D.[/b]

A great wishlist. But in case you want something more immediately tangible, you could always go for this: http://cgi.ebay.com/1995-SMU-MUSTANGS-R ... dZViewItem

FWMustang, I am waiting for the 'rare' items on ebay to resurface, or be offered by '65. I think he is holding out with a rarely used set of Craig James' up-to-the-knees socks. You have to wait for the good stuff.

One more thing...I want to see DeMyron Martin run from an 'I' or 'Jumbo' set next year, at least in goal line situations.
See Rice '06. Give this kid a head of steam instead of transitioning from a five yard dead stop.

I would love to see a QB under center on 3rd and 1 . . . not in the "pistol" or shotgun... maybe at least the threat of a QB sneak could cause the D to shift in and open up the 3 or 5 hole.
Sports, and all that implies.

People were asking that about us in the early 80s. :)

Mr. Pony, those teams DID recruit the players that came to SMU...there were greater incentives to playing here than at, say, A&M ( see Eric Dickerson 1979...wonderful maroon ride he showed up with in September ). That said, I am less about looking back and more about developing a recruiting pattern that at the LEAST allows SMU to offer to athletes that our opponents in CUSA.

although having another Byron Hunt would be nice right about now

Is that the name of a store, or just two dudes working out of a van in the parking lot?
