no recently fired or about to be fired coaches

Postby Hoop Fan » Fri Nov 16, 2007 8:06 pm

No Nutt, No Fran, please. Both are tainted right now and need a year to lay low before jumping back in. Nobody is going to think we stole Nutt from Arkansas, everyone will see that for the firing it would be. Kragthorpe is a total yawner really. If it ain't a Bowden or Barnett, its gotta be Turner Gill. Big upside, minimal downside.

would you really complain if Fran was the coach? if it meant that we had a competitive program, a la tcu, we should all be happy!

nevermind, i forgot who i was talking to. we could hire jimmy johnson as the head coach, spurrier for the offensive coordinator, and stoops as the defensive coordinator, and everyone would still complain cuz none of them have won a national championship within the last year.

What is so special about Turner Gill? He went 2-10 last year and is 4-6 this year at an awful school in an awful conference. What makes you all so sure he could do well here, a school with much higher academics, more competition for recruits, and an all around harder time to coach than Buffalo. With Gill little prospects for improvement and actually a step down from Bennett.

you're probably right, he is Nebraska's favorite son for no reason whatsover. You do realize he is probably under serious consideration for Nebraska job right now. If they can't justify it yet because of his age and record, he could fall into our laps.

Nebraska has said nothing. They haven't even fired their coach yet, it's fairly inevitable, but Nebraska has said nothing. You are citing ridiculous internet rumors and using them as fact.

Am I saying that Gill will or won't go to Nebraska? No, that would be stupid because I honestly have no idea. The most basic question we need to ask is "can he succeed here?". Yeah, he's done a fairly good job at Buffalo in his first two years, but would that carry over to SMU if we got him? Makes you so certain that he could work magic at SMU? I say let him hone in on his head coaching skills and do his thing. We don't need someone as inexperienced as Gill right now.

When did we all of a sudden matter? We can't hire a coach like Nutt or Fran, coaches that have won big in BCS conferences? Hell, last time we went looking for a coach, it came down to Bennett or Charlie Waters......the fact that we could get guys who have won at the highest level is a dream come true. It's like this board is staring a gift horse in the mouth.

An Arkansas news station is reporting that Nutt will not return to Arkansas in 2008:

Probably not. From the 40/29 report, sounds like he's headed to Baylor.
