Facebook Digg DEL.ICIO.US Newsvine Reddit Honesty’s Gailey’s strong suit

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Terence Moore Chan Gailey is an unappreciated treasure at Georgia Tech for many reasons. Those trips to bowl games after each of his five seasons with the Yellow Jackets. Taking what has become a deceptively solid football program to the ACC championship game last year. A stint in the NFL, where 11 of the 14 seasons he was a coach of any kind in the league concluded in the playoffs.

Even so, the primary reason why those in the Tech Nation should cherish Gailey more than they do is his character.

There is his straightforward tongue, for instance. Few of his peers would ignore the land mines surrounding the following questions and answer them without fear of blowing up.

Given your lengthy flirtation earlier this year with becoming the head guy of the Pittsburgh Steelers or Miami Dolphins, do recruits and their parents ask you about that? If they do, what do you tell them? And how long will you be with the Jackets, by the way?

Good read. We could do a lot worse than Gailey.

We've established that he is an honorable person.

Can he outcoach anybody else in the CUSA?
Can he recruit Texas?
Can he create a program, regardless of whether he stays or not?

And the final BIG BOGIE BAT HEX...Does he really want the SMU job?

I may be wavering on my Gailey stance a little. His credentials certainly indicate a large step up from the prior regime. But he's just so damn vanilla. One of the biggest challenges facing this new coach, and maybe his biggest, is to reinvigorate theSMU fans base, and I mean all 1500 of them. Chan Gailey cannot get that done without winning first. There are names that have been talked about ad nasuem that can do it fom the outset.

But, then again, a big name could lead to big expectations, and you know my admonition about expectations....

I am so tired of people ripping on vanilla. It's a great flavor, and it is most definitely not "plain". Chocolate and strawberry just receive more press.

If we could only find a Neapolitan coach, we'd have it all.

Recent recruitinig classes have commitments from Houston, Arlington and Irving, including 4 star RB Jamaal Evans...I guarentee his Cowboy name alone gives him a presence in Texas recruiting.

Chan last coached the Cowboys in 1999. I doubt if any HS Seniors even remember him from that time. If they do, it's just as another failed Cowboy coach. (Although in hindsight, much better than his replacement)

Just like USC recruits dismissed Pete Carroll as a failed NE coach, right? Trust me, coaching the Dallas Cowboys does help his credentials.

Carroll was just 2 years removed not 8, but regardless, Gailey is far removed from Carroll's ability to recruit. To compare the two is ludicrous.

Yeah, but the parents of the players would know who Gailey is. Their coaches would know Gailey. Again, I don't think he's the guy, but he ain't a bad candidate. He might be the bargaining chip for Orsini to wave under the nose of the guy he wants.

Sorry, not meaning to imply the two are equilvalent. Who recruits better is irrelevant, the bottom line is that Gailey's experience as the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys will have a positive impact on recruiting. He was, at one time, the leader of the benchmark franchise every Texas HS kid looks up to. Moreover, he recently landed a top 20 class at GT (yes BCS fans, they do have some stringent academic standards). What's ludicrous is to think that he won't be able to recruit the state of Texas at a competitive level.
