Under the Radar...

Postby PonyPatrol » Thu Nov 29, 2007 2:06 pm

With Les Miles imminent departure, the rumor around LSU is that Jack Del Rio is the leading candidate to take over in Baton Rouge.

Is it possilbe Mike Shula is waiting to see how this situation progress, i.e. wait to see if Del Rio bolts? There will obviously be a bit of a shakeup in that Jaguars staff, and this might present Shula with the perfect out.

This also may lend some credibility to why we're waiting this out for a few more days...

Just a thought, but this sounds like a big name coach that hasn't been getting a great deal of pub around here.

No baggage. Head coaching experience. Currently in the NFL. This seems to mirror recent Orsini remarks...

Yeah, When I was just looking back to the time when he hired Bennett...Looked like MAYBE there were 7-10 real contributors(not me)... I like the involvement though, keep em coming.

Maybe it demonstrates there is hidden interest in SMU football out there. And maybe this is the first time in 18 years that people really have hope that the program will be respectable again. Wonderful thing, hope. As long as SMU can deliver. Otherwise, for most, it's back into hibernation.

OK, this might be a stretch, but Del Rio was also a Cowboy linebacker '89-92 during the time that Orsini was the head of administration for the Cowboys. Furthermore, the two were then running is close proximity/circles with their most recent jobs in Florida.

It would be hard to believe the two know each other personally. Might be another connection to Shula that has been overlooked. Especially, if Del Rio is open to keeping Orsini updated on the latest developments with LSU...

Oh, and 10-2 at Alabama isn't successful? The state of that program was a mess when Shula took over and he was just breaking in as a head coach. Again, we're not bringing in Spurrier, let's do what we can..

One 10-2 record. Otherwise, never over .500 - no that's not successful. Especially when the new coach comes in and the first thing he has to do is start benching your old starters because the are soft.

School Year W L Pct. Notes
Alabama 2003 4 9 .308
Alabama 2004 6 6 .500 Music City Bowl (Loss)
Alabama 2005 10 2 .833 Cotton Bowl (Win)
Alabama 2006 6 6 .500 Independence Bowl (loss under interim coach)
Total 4 26 23 .531

If you call this successful, fine, but I don't. I was at Alabama during the time that he was there and it was an abject disaster. No discipline on the field or off and the fans will get tired of watching the most uninspired football ever played. During the entire Shula era, the Tide never came from behind in the 4th Quarter. If we were losing in the 4th, we were toast.

I hear ya on the Tide's "soft" play in recent years, and obviously Saban hasn't been able to cure that in year one. For some reason, now there's patience...

Regardless, my point is not to insinuate that Shula is the best man for the job, but that there exists a real possibility that he may be targetted by SMU, in light of recent developments.

And all I'm saying is that I hope he's not. The patience now comes from the fact that this is year 1 of Saban. What did Shula in was the off-the-field lack of discipline of the team. The boosters got tired of hearing from fans about players getting arrested with guns and weed and not serving any sort of suspension. See the case of Juwan Simpson. Stopped with loaded pistol, stolen and a bag of weed and no punishment - so far as was known in public. I don't want to see this at SMU.

You guys still haven't figured out that all these new posters are really Orsini with multiple identities just trying to keep us in suspense.
