There are many outstanding players in the area that have not committed to a college. In addition, many who have committed that could change their minds.
Who is going to get their attention?
Turner Gill- Yes
Bowden- Yes
Barnett- Yes
Nutt- who have
Dennis Green- yes
O'Leary- maybe
Mason- maybe but probably not
Neuhiesel?- maybe
PJ- ? I don't think so.
Time to keep some of the top talent @ home & this hire should & must do that.
Also, time to hire 3 to 4 of the top coaches in the DISD & surrounding area.
Let's make up for lost time NOW !

"Who would attract Cyrus Gray & the DISD kids"
Chuck, I am going to go with a winning program, not one that has been a doormat for 20 years.
We have never tried this concept, win more games.
Nailed it.

yeah, you're right. We should probably go into our cocoon/bubble for the next 20 years. I don't care if you or anybody else considered tubbs a failure in LESS than 2 years here, that doesn't mean you give up on the goal of a much greater local presence. I agree with much of Papas post. Turner Gill would be statement hire and he would make major inroads in DFW. Not a 'wow' hire, a statement. Barnett is the best fit for what SMU should be trying to do. Not becoming more like the Naval Academy. Just because Bennett became a punchline to most of you, like all recent coaches at SMU have become, it does not mean that his 300 mile radius theory wasn't dead on. Especially in football on our budget. Are we going to the mid atlantic to recruit?

I'm not saying hire a head coach with Dallas ties.
There are kids that want to stay home.
They just need a good reason. Great school, good team & FAN SUPPORT !
CUSA is a conference that a team can turn it around completely in 1 year.
CUSA & the WAC are 2 conferences that come to mind that a new coach/system can be successful immediately & become an instant hero locally & nationally.

You are presuming that Johnson can't attract them. You don't even know if he is going to run the triple option in the same form here as he did at Navy.
There's too much presuming goin' on.
Heck, we don't even know if he is the next coach. Hey, but don't let those five consecutive bowl appearances by Navy bother you.

The world is about perception. Especially the worlds of recruits and common fans. You better believe perceptions matter because they are hard to overcome.

Not from where I come from. And should Johnson be the coach and he and his staff actually talk to these kids face to face, then we'll know more.
Too many people whispering and not knowing exactly what they are whispiering about.

Having played ball & having a players mindset compared to the average fan, I feel qualified to say I know what it takes to convince good/great players to sign.
Barnett, Gill & Bowden have it.
Johnson may have it, I don't know. But I know the other 3 have it.
You get Gray to sign & you will have a domino situation. Many other locals would follow & SMU could challenge immediately.
And if it is Johnson, great. Go get Cyrus & let him run the ball 30 x's from under center, shotgun or whatever. His buddies @ DeSoto, Cedar Hill, Kimball, Carter, Waxahachie can be on the other side of the ball allowing us to have a real defense.

Coaches have nothing to do with it. Get these kids on campus and tell them they will play here and get the best education in the nation.

Why did you not demand that Bennett go get him while he was recruiting here? Does Johnson automatically fail as a coach now if a recruit we probably would not have gotten before does not sign with us now?

How long do you want to give a coach? The two biggest elements we require for the position are 1) recruiting and 2) on and off-court coaching. In two years, Tubbs sucked at both. If you can't recruit at all for two years, and that's your big selling point, why should anyone think it will be any different the next year, when the team loses more games and has less to sell? People need to give up the JT arguments because they completely lack merit. If something sux, give it up and move on. Try something else. If that sux, do it again. In the immortal words of Jerry, it's the way it is "where we live today, sports."
