Turner Gill named MAC Coach of the Year (famousguy = madman)

Postby Hoop Fan » Sun Dec 02, 2007 11:44 am

anybody (famousguy included) who says Gill is not or should not be a viable candidate for SMU is not credible.

We need someone who has a history of winning. This has as much viability as someone trying to hire Phil away after last year. (Yes, I know Phil wasn't COY, but bringing a bad team in a non-BCS conference to a .500 record is comparable.)

Whether you like to admit it or not, Turner Gill does not have a history of winning. He may turn out to be a great coach that goes really far, but he doesn't have the clout behind him that we need.

Do you think all the coaches in the MAC got to together and said hey, even though this guys only one 4 confrence games let's vote him coach of the year, maybe SMU will hire him and we'll get rid of him? Just joking!

Who the F are we? Too clean and good for Barnett, Bowden and Mason? Too good for Gill? Ridiculous.

I think Gill is a really good option, if no Paul Johnson. We need a proven winner, and what Gill has done at Buffalo is really impressive. I'd prefer him to anyone not named Paul Johnson

My first choice was Barnett. What he did at Northwestern was unbelievable. I think he deserves a second chance too, much like I wouldnt be an SMU fan if i didn't think the school had redeeming qualities and didn't deserve a second chance after one of the biggest scandal in college sports history. In that way, I think its a good match and I think Barnett would work his ace off to redeem himself.

I would not be at all mad if Johnson was the guy. Very hopeful in fact, but i don't think it would be the slam dunk and perfect fit that others do. Gill seems like a very good fit to me and presumably not the product of a bidding war.

I would take Gill in a heartbeat, especially if we cannot get Johnson. He would be a great addition with his local ties.

Local ties are very important. It worked really well for Tubbs in basketball and for Bennett in Football recruiting.

EVERY coach worth his salt has recruited Texas at some point.
Ok this is getting ridiculous...I agree with Dutch on THIS ONE POST by him totally

stupid. You can debate whether tubbs was head coach material, but not that recruiting your backyard is not important. Its the lifeblood of any school not named Notre Dame.

I'm still hesitant on Gill. Granted he's done a fine job with a VERY bare cupboard at Buffalo this year, but I would really like to see a similar performance over the course of a few years.

As far as recruiting is concerned Buffalo had the #115 class in the country last year, while SMU was #98....similar output so far this year as well. We are assuming these numbers will change when you marry these two powerhouses? Everyone who has recently coached at SMU has had "Texas Ties"...

I realize this is a partially flawed arguement, as Buffalo is a relatively new 1A program and recruiting could improve over time with Gill's success on the field, but so far his credentials read "incomplete" to me.

Let me see this over 6 years and then you have a candidate of PJ's caliber IMO..

as I've said there is not a Division 1A Texas college Football team in the history of College Football (with the possible exception of a few Rice teams which briefly flirted with a national recruiting program because of their academic requirements and perhaps UTEP) which have not recruited at a minimum 85% of their players from the state of Texas. That's the way it has always been and the way it always will be. Those suggesting otherwise have never shown any knowledge in the subject. In other words they are talking out of their asses. Of course, Texas ties are important.

You know, I think we already did our Turner Gill hire. That was 6 years ago and his name was Phil Bennett.

Will TG be better than PB...probably.

Can SMU take that risk...hopefully not...the stakes are simply too high this time around.

I don't care if all the coaches in the nation voted him the "Greatest Coach of all Times", HIS RECORD TO THIS POINT IS 5-17.

RECORDS SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS(VOTES), 5-17

at least get it right. His record is not 5-17. Once again MAC Coach of the Year and co-division champ. In his second year. We could do better maybe (I'm waiting), and we could do alot worse.
