I actually like Turner a lot. I think his hands are tied with the donors.
Can we read anything into his comments? Didn't he say "we have two lists, and we'd like to get someone off of the list of coaches without problematic histories"? I took that to mean Orsini wanted Barnett (since it was shortly after he threw his hat in the ring) and Turner didn't, but I would bet it's the donors/faculty and not all Turner. At what point do we get to move to list number 2?

The football team is already not well liked by the rest of the faculty...hiring someone with a questionable past will just bring all those complaints to a boil again.
Give us another stab at a wart free guy and then we will go after someone with a past.

Turner has been a blessing for SMU. Even if he demands a choir boy coach, he is putting a lot into athletics. If Augie Pye (R.I.P.) could have had his way, there would be no football (or an engineering school) at SMU.

NO!
Give him a raise because he hired The Mob Boss!
Who by the way has us bidding with schools like Georgia Tech as opposed to coaches from Valdosta State!
C-ya @ Milos!

OK OK. I didnt think it would cause that big of a stink. Turner is a great guy. He has done a lot, but I think we all know it is easier to ask for forgiveness than permission. Maybe if he just bent a little it might make things move a little smoother

yeah, not liked until we start winning, that drives applications by high school kids up. that means the school can increase their admission standards. that means that you've got 'smarter' students at the school. that makes the faculty happy.
if you need a direct reference here, look west to TCU. their applications increased 40% when they went 10-1. and have continued to rise.

He is very approachable. I talked to him several times during my time at SMU. He even called me back several times when I left messages with his secretary. More than I can say for most people in his position
