Rick would be an awesome fit for SMU. What a huge dissapointment it will be if we are not giving this guy a fair shake.

What do you mean conflicting? The DMN reported last week that he wasn't a candidate.

Precisely who is a candidate? Does anyone really know?
Steve-O and maybe Mike Vaught know.
That is it.

Neuheisel interested in SMU job

08:08 PM CST on Wednesday, November 28, 2007
By KATE HAIROPOULOS / The Dallas Morning News

Rick Neuheisel said Wednesday he had been contacted indirectly
about the open SMU football coaching job.

The Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator and former Colorado
and Washington head coach said he would be interested in
the position
.

"It's a diamond in the rough," Neuheisel said of SMU.

Neuheisel said he missed college football and would be interested
in the right opportunity, but he wasn't bent on leaving the NFL.

Neuheisel was fired from Washington for participating in an
off-campus NCAA basketball tournament pool. He later received
a $4.5 million settlement from the university and the NCAA,
which essentially cleared him of wrongdoing.

AND HERE'S THE LATEST STORY SAYING HE IS NOT A CANDIDATE.
SMU's top coaching candidate hired by Georgia Tech

09:41 PM CST on Friday, December 7, 2007
By KATE HAIROPOULOS / The Dallas Morning News
[email protected]

Georgia Tech trumped SMU on Friday, hiring Navy's Paul Johnson as its new football coach.

SMU had targeted Johnson, who visited the Hilltop on Tuesday. Johnson also met with Duke this week.

Almost six weeks after firing coach Phil Bennett, SMU athletic director Steve Orsini still hasn't filled the most important coaching position on campus. SMU was the first Bowl Subdivision program this season to fire its coach.

Orsini, who declined comment through a spokesman, has raised about $10 million from boosters toward salaries for the new coach and his staff. SMU didn't appear to blink at Johnson's $1.5 million annual compensation at Navy.

Johnson's seven-year contract at Georgia Tech is worth more than $11 million, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

The Yellow Jackets have some qualities SMU can't offer. They play in the ACC, a BCS conference, and have earned a bowl bid each of the last 11 seasons.

SMU plays in Conference USA and has had one winning season since 1989.

"It seemed like a match made in heaven to me," Johnson said during his introductory news conference. "I do not think there is another program I would have left the Naval Academy for. When we coach, we search for a school or football program that you can compete on a national level for championships, and certainly I feel that way about Georgia Tech."

Johnson met with Duke officials Monday before traveling to Dallas. But the day after his SMU visit, he was on another plane to Atlanta, where he met with Georgia Tech officials for the second time.

Johnson returned to work Thursday at Navy, and made his decision public Friday morning.

Johnson was 45-29 in six seasons at Navy and led the Midshipmen to five consecutive bowl berths. He previously led Georgia Southern to two Division I-AA national titles.

Where SMU goes from here is unclear. Orsini has said he wanted a proven coach, and has appeared to target current head coaches.

SMU requested permission this week from Air Force athletic director Dr. Hans Mueh to speak to coach Troy Calhoun, according to Academy spokesman Troy Garnhart. But Calhoun, an Air Force alumnus who ed the Falcons to a 9-3 record in his first season, told SMU he was committed to the Academy, according to Garnhart.

On Nov. 21, Louisville coach Steve Kragthorpe held a news conference to dispel speculation that he was leaving for SMU.

Rick Neuheisel, the former Colorado and Washington coach and current Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator, said last week he was interested in the SMU job and had been indirectly contacted about the position.

But a source with knowledge of the school's search said this week that Neuheisel isn't being considered.

re:"something to do with the fact that CU was losing....so barnet came in ...wherever neuheisal goes he get replaced"

Wrong!

Neuheisal was lured away from Colorado by an offer
from the University of Washington he could not refuse.

He was not fired from Colorado and at Washington he
was fired for off-field reasons that were later determined
unjustified.

Unless it was Neuheisel that began to shy away from the reported "indirect" contact from SMU, any declaration that he is not a candidate for this job by Turner/Orsini would reflect complete negligence....

I just don't understand how he does not fit our criteria.

Of course, we keep hearing how the whole process is a smokescreen - who knows....Wish they would just toss us a bone...

Yes, but if you read my post it is a response
as to whether he would be interested and it is a fact that
he is interested.

Also my article quotes him by name that he is interested,
yours on the other hand uses an un-named source.

It's the same reporter who wrote both stories for the same paper. Also, this second story appeared about a week after the first one. So you can say that angle of the story was updated.

Usually, a reporter doesn't name sources. And how do you know the source wasn't verified? I don't think Kate is in the business of writing a story with shaky info. If she got it from someone that Rick's not being considered and felt comfortable with it and probably got it cleared with her editor, they ran with it.

This is not hard to understand. I don't care if Rick was quoted directly or not. That doesn't mean anything.
