How much freedom does your AD have to make the hire and how much, if any, influence do the boosters who helped raise the staggering amount of cash you guys have on hand?

I ask because in our search two years ago, it's rumored that a big booster was the primary reason we hired Brian VanGorder (If you want someone who is competent, go anywhere else.)
