Silence please! Why are we the only school that doesn't give us any info on what is going on? Why is this secrecy so necessary? Are we waiting for yet another coach to finish his season? What gives?
could be waiting for an NFL oach to be eliminated. Seriously unless we get some one by tommorrow its not going to matter much if its December 12 or January 6th. We are screwed either way. This will affect the program for 5 years.
Re: Silence please!
probably because Orsini doesn't want people to know how many times we have struck out so far...
We're not the only school that doesn't give any coaching search info. With the possible exception of Houston, this is the way every school does it.
Like someone else said, by being secretive, fewer people know how many times we've been turned down. If you think it's depressing to wait this long, just imagine if Orsini posted the long list of coaches who said, "No thanks." I bet it's a lot longer than most of you could imagine.
Re: Silence please!
Exactly.
I think that timeframe is a little long. But I do think you are looking at about a 2-year impact. Really, it's going to depend how much the redshirts contribute next year and if the returners take a step forward. If you get that, then your damage is minimized. If you don't, then it's longer than 5 years. Hell, my kids will be out of college by then.
i agree 100%. and its hard to blame him for it. hell i wouldn't tell anyone either. although i think he has made two mistakes (there are probably others but i cant remember right now) so far: (1) using superlatives when he said he want a "national coach/best coach in america (something like that, cant remember exactly what he said)" AND (2) letting PJ make him wait 5 days to make a decision. he should have told PJ, "i need to know Wed AM or else i need to go elsewhere....show some leverage in the deal and doesnt look we are desparate"...i think Steve-O knew PJ might not be doing a deal as we found out Friday AM that he was wanting to talk to Air Force's Troy Calhoun.
Beginning to understand why its important to complete Step 1 (installing a competitive Model) BEFORE starting Step 2(Hiring a Coach)? And the impact will be felt more in Years 3-4 than Years 1-2 especially if we end up signing a lot of dead wood to sit on the bench and take up scholarships for 4 years
There are good reasons on both sides for it to be quiet. The school doesn't want to look like it's been turned down, and neither does the coach.
I just feel like Orsini had a plan when he came to SMU - which probably included Johnson. He probably didn't bank on him becoming this "hot commodity" this season (I mean really - what did he do anyway? Yes - good record, but he lost to DELAWARE). I think PJ was having his name thrown out there this season in hopes of getting the Nebraska job - and then found three other schools bidding for him. I also think that PJ probably led Orsini on. I can't imagine for the life of me why else he would have put all of his eggs in the PJ basket unless he honestly felt he was going to land him. I don't know Orsini - but have read enough about him to know that he doesn't like to lose, either - and probably has a pretty big ego (most guys who have those positions do and HAVE to). The problem at this point - is that these searches should have one thing and one thing only as their main objective - HIRE A COACH WHO WILL WIN FOOTBALL GAMES within the framework of your institution. It's great to talk about "changing the model", etc. but the bottom line is - the fans and players and students want to win more games NOW. There are coaches out there that have proven they can walk into an existing situation and make lemonade out of lemons. As the winning comes, so does fan support, "fannies in the seats", and a renewed commitment to the program by the administration, boosters, etc. Chan Gailey got fired, Karl Dorrell got fired for doing LESS with what they had. I hope egos do not get in the way of hiring A right person for the job (notice I didn't say THE right person - because I'm sure there are a couple of coaches who could do a great job).
