Bower is a winner plain and simple. That is what we need. Someone who has been a head coach with a proven winning record. He must have been doing something right all those years at So. Miss. if he gets fired for going 7-5.

True, but the names are getting less and less, unless we still a HC from somebody. Can't see that happening.

I seriously doubt we'd be taking this long to find a coach if we were really going after Bower (or Bowden/Barnett/etc).
Something bigger is brewing, or at least SO is trying to brew it up.
I could see Bower as a safety net, but nothing more.

Southern Miss. 2008 recruiting class in rated presently at #73. Bower coached teams certainly play well and he would be a big step for our program, but recruiting might still be a problem.

I agree. SO is trying to pull a rabbit out of a hat, but it might take too long for that. It could backfire on him. We could take Bower as a safety net right now before he gets picked up by another school and starts kicking are asses again.

Recruiting here will be a problem for the next 3-5 years. That is if we can win some games. The HC will have to establish a recruiting base. It will take some time. Winning will help. That is the first task, win. Bower can do that.

How key is the head coach in recruiting? If the HC is a poor recruiter, can you make up for it with assistants or recruiters?

In order to get past the image of SMU football teams developed over the last couple of decades as it relates to recruiting, I think we need a coach that the kids are going to want to play for regardless of what team he is coaching. That to a certain degree does relate to the WOW factor.

I'm going back to my old standby...Paul Newman.

Also remember, Bower had the luxury of recruiting for a school that was...how shall we say this... one step above a school for people who ride the short bus. And his recruiting classes were still not that great.

Assistants are crucial to recruiting. HC does need to be strong recruiter at SMU in my opinion though. They players are also play a big part since they are the hosts throughout the recruiting weekends.

He was on staff as SMU under Bobby Collins....isn't that more of a past than Bowden or Barnett?

Bower would win alot of those close games we lost this year. Against TCU down 21-7 in the 2nd quarter, Bower would have been kicking field goals on 4th inside the 20 ( what no points 5 times) which would have given us a chance to get back in it......Still if we can get a big name coach that recruits will want to visit with, then I think our recruiting will improve more quickly.
