I realize the SEC recruits well, but I wouldn't call a team built on three years of recruits from classes ranked 18th or better the "dregs"...Major has a little bit of talent to work with. Enough to beat Louisiana Monroe I would think..

No but recruiting is relative to your competition.

Exactly. Did they out recruit Louisiana Monroe?

On a side note, Major has been doing a fantastic job of recruiting this year. When rumors began circulating about his departure for a HC job, he met personally with Star Jackson to ensure he kept his commitment to Bama.

We could REALLY use a player like Star Jackson about once a decade...

No but they did recruit well enough to make it to a bowl.
... is still Major Applewhite. I'd probably buy season tickets if he became the head coach. I think this squad needs someone who is young and has ambition. Besides, can SMU really go down from here? 0-fer and 1-11 is as bad as it gets. Take a chance on a guy who has the potential to be great. Look at the stepping stones Mack Brown took to get to Texas. Looks like Major could be following a similar path.

But what do I know? Not a whole helluva lot.
.......... Speaking of coaches, maybe we should consider Louisana Monroe Coach Charlie Weatherbie who Paul Johnson worked at Navy 10 years ago. Must be a pretty good coach.....Their 2008 Rivals recruiting class is ranked # 104......and he beat Alabama and Major Applewhite this year.....Do you think Applewhite could beat North Texas if he came hear ? North Texas did beat Louisana Monroe this year.....

Do you really think Major Applewhite is the best available coach? In the same paragraph you say he has the potential to be a great coach - that's not the same as "best available". Guys like Terry Bowden, Rick Neuheisel and Gary Barnett are proven winners and are available and therefore disqualify MA as best available. Whether they are acceptable to SMU is a different issue.

Let's try to avoid confusing allegiance for the Longhorns with rational decision-making.

Futhermore, Major Applewhite does not fit the qualifications for the job. (See online job posting.) Requires a minimum of five years of coaching experience.

And Jeff Bower! He'd qualify as better than Applewhite. Nothing against Applewhite. Heck, if he'd come to SMU as the OC I would be ecstatic - maybe lay the groundwork for him to eventually assume the HC job.

Applewhite's record as a Division 1 assistant coach is 1-11 at Syracuse in 2005, 7-6 at Rice in 2006, and 6-6 at Alabama this year. Applewhite's total record is 14 wins and 23 loses in three years. That makes him actually the least qualified of all potential candidates mentioned.

Can you see Applewhite storming into a faculty senate meeting demanding a PE major. He'd be laughed out of the room.
