I'd ad Billick to that list.

Haha. I like it. Maybe it'll be the surprise ending for SMU's new MustangNation reality TV show (still no response from the guys that made TwoADays).

The guy has only had two sub.500 seasons anywhere (one OKSt another UM) in 28 years of coaching. If he is so terrible, he's one lucky sonofagun.

most people on this board dont care about cold hard facts. i.e. STATS, all they see and think about when Cokers name pops up is him driving the program into the ground and not being able to control his "thugs"

Once and for all. Everybody stop talking about HC stats at other schools. This is SMU. What a coach did prior to possibly taking this job does not mean crap, else we would have coaches beating our doors down thinking they can do the same. I appreciate all the research some of you do to get these numbers that mean nothing here, but please chill out on the stats. This is a special place, with special people and most coaches no that. It will take a special coach (they are all taken) and Coker, Graham, Dodge, Gill, Bowden, Barnett aint it. Orsini understands this why can't some of you. We may have to settle once again, but I hope not. Our coach is out there. I am still holding out for Bower or Moore since Haywood and Coach K. aint interested.

sometimes people need to know facts...and Stats are cold hard facts...PB had no prior stats so we dont know whats going to happen now in this present day if we bring a proven winner in...

I want results, a coach with a great resume that has had previous results sounds like a good hire to me...

ill talk stats all i want, its what i know the best

he lobbied publically for the Tulsa job. And of course he wanted it. If he is considering us, you can deduce he wanted the Tulsa job.

Could have sworn I said Rice, but keep throwing those facts out there.

so you like Tulsa leftovers? at least the guy had a history in Oklahoma, so that made a degree of sense. Makes none for us.

bigdaddy-

If Orsini knows that SMU needs a special coach, why is ESPN reporting that its employee (Coker) is interviewing at SMU? You can take your Orsini rant (below) and direct it to Orsini

Worst. Hire. Ever.

If you gave me 100 guesses I would never have thought of Larry Coker.
Back off Warchild seriously.

He can recruit too. I think Coker would be a good pick for you guys. Miami has had off the field issues no matter who their coach has been. I am not sure how much of that you can put directly on Coker although yes I do understand that the buck stops with the HC.

Where is this even being reported? Is there some corroborating evidence that this was actually aired live on ESPN? It is not on their site.

Yes, PLEASE ORSINI, do NOT bring in a proven winner on a national level who only wins from others and can't build a program (even if he's never been given the chance). We need an unproven commodity or a guy who has been out of coaching for MORE than one year.

This makes absolutely no sense. If this was the choice, why have we waited so long?? This deal could have been done 2 hours after we fired PB...

I'm not a Coker fan, but he is a name and we could do worse. That being said, it seems illogical that we would wait 7 weeks for Coker...

But on the bright side, at least we would have our very own LC at SMU!!

Turner Gill would be 10 times the better hire for us

Wow. That's convincing. So if you're the guy investing 2m/year for a guy to run your company, you throw away the candidate who ran Wal-Mart with a great degree of succes for several years (yes, an .800 winning % is successful), just because he inherited a great business plan? Instead, you rationalize spending your money on an "up and comer" who ALMOST has Mike's Hardware out of the red....

If I'm on the board, I might be a little uncomfortable with that logic.

(Don't fight the analogy, you get the point...)

Furthermore, I think Tulsa made a good decision to hire Graham, who is now in the running for WVU...that doesn't necessarily speak unfavorably about Coker...[/quote]

One reason there may have been a delay in talking to Coker may be his buyout from Miami. He was fired December 8, 2006 and was in only the second year of a $2MM per year contract extension. Perhaps, he had some front end money coming from Miami if he was not employed as a coach by 12/8/07? Wild guess, but anything's possible.
