Coker could not recruit as well as Butch Davis. In fact, he supposedly loathes recruiting.

Thank God you're not in charge of the hiring!!! Lets see do I hire a guy who has won 2 national championships and has an .800 winning percentage playing the best teams in the nation or a guy who is 1-11 in college but has won a whole lot of high school games???? Reeeal tough decision. :? :? :? :? :? :?

I asked earlier that we stop posting coaches past records at other schools. This is SMU. I am asking now that we stop posting coaches recruiting histories as well. This is SMU. A coach has not coached until he coaches at SMU. A coach has not recruited until he recruits at SMU. Stop comparing other schools to us. We are far better but distinguised in what we do and how we operate.

Well that makes it no fun...if we throw out all past histories, stats, impressions and appearances, does every hire we take have to be viewed as a blank tablet...Bowden, Barnett or not?

Big daddy are u really this ignorant??? Anytime you hire someone, whether it be coaches or paper salesmen you look at their past results. You cant be that stupid.

No one is comparing the candidates past school to SMU. We want a coach who has a track record of success and the way coaches are graded is their win/loss record at other universities. Deal with it.

Note: Ponyfans can we start a fake board for Bigdaddy to go and post rediculous things while we stay here.

I am not BIgDaddy but if SMU can get Coker I think that is a WOW hire. The guy can coach is a big name guy that can hopefully bring in some solid cordinators and get some kids to play for the Mustangs !

There is no other way to evaluate a coach than by looking at his past, and as uninspiring as Coker may seem, his past is strong. True, SMU is different, but that will be the same for any coach. Not sure what magic intangibles will make a coach perfect for this job but a resume like Coker's doesn't hurt when he goes out recruiting.

Also, people claim that Coker won with Butch Davis' players, but nobody mentions that as OC under Davis, he would've been heavily involved in recruiting all of those offensive players at the U that are now playing on Sundays. Just look on Rivals at big schools, and the recruiting contact for a lot of the players are the coordinators.

I take a guy going up in his career and not a guy going down at the end of his career. The dude is 60. Had his dream job and lost it. When you are 40, you pick yourself up off the floor and start climbing the ladder again like Doherty. I don't know about when you are 60 (and he looks 70).

Last time SMU hired a guy like that had his dream job and lost it, the name was Copeland.
