QuestionAbout a prospective coaches off-field problems. How does Cokar rate an interview when Barnett, Bowden and Neuheisal don't? Miami is as dirty a school for off-field issues as there is. For godsake, Coker was canned after his team starting a brawl after the clock expired.
Re: Question
Maybe he displayed a sense of humor. Our primary req.
yes, you can say that he should have had better control of his players, but that was a spur of the moment incident in the heat of a contest. AND, as far as i am aware, he never received any sanctions against his 'office' like barnett or neuheisel - even if they were cleared of them.
FWIW, I would be extremely happy with any of these guys. Our last 2 HC's have been a DC and a DII HC. now some of the folks on this site are complaining about a national HC of the year, winner of a NC? Just who do we think we are? Orsini's marketing plan of being in the top 25 in everything is working, and it seems people are buying it. we've been a bottom feeder unfortunately for too long, and now we think we're too good for any of these guys that are rumored to be interested? At least Stallions not buying it, he wants to continue with our run of unproven, mediocrity and hire Todd Dodge. Ok this is getting ridiculous...I agree with Dutch on THIS ONE POST by him totally
Re: Question
In all fairness to Coker, the clock had not expired yet. The fight started after an extra point attempt after a Miami player bowed to the crowd after scoring a touchdown. Classic U. As for Coker, he had this to say about the fight. "I think that it will affect the image of our program greatly, but in a positive way," he said. "I think that when they see the video and they see how it was handled they will be impressed with our players." Additionally, he was quoted in the Miami Herald as saying "I think you've got a lot of players from their team frustrated because they're not here, and maybe were not recruited." I guess this incident is less serious than betting in a March Madness pool with the blessings of a University's compliance officer. Coker no, Neuheisal YES!!!

Jt, we don't know all the ins and outs of this search. We don't know if we talked to Barnett's agent and got some response that killed our interest. I just don't know why some of the names we've mentioned were not interviewed. It may be that while Coker's gangsta teams were tough to manage off the field, there were not the NCAA violation problems during his tenure at the U that preceded him. (The Tennis shoe shopping spree). Barnett and Neuheisel did have NCAA violation issues during their watches at Colorado mostly. To be honest I would pick Coker over Neuheisel if it were my choice. I would probably pick Barnett over Coker, for reasons I've stated many times. But the key fact here is that any one of those names is a huge step up in terms of committment by this University over other hires since Forrest Gregg.
All the Larry Coker-bashers: Is there any circumstance under which you would hire Larry Coker?
I HATE the University of Texas!
