SMU Football Blog wrote:Ya know what? I was wrong. I got the date of that one incident wrong. I will correct the post when I get home tonight (I can't edit blog entries at work).

It wasn't intentional or malicious. I can find the blog post I read that listed the wrong date if you would like.

Then can I include the signing of a player to a national letter of intent after they have been indicted for a felony? Albeit the charge was trumped up and stupid. How about Brandon Meriweather mistakenly shooting Willie Cooper in the @$$?

You are forgiven, Blog. I noticed it when you said it yesterday, but when it went up on the blog, I just thought we should get the truth out there before everyone started quoting it as gospel.

In any case, Coker was not the coach who created Thug-U, Dennis Erickson was (and probably it really began under Jimmy Johnson to some extent.) Sure, Coker didn't do anything to improve the situation, but neither did Butch Davis, and I don't think that anyone in here would complain if we hired Erickson or Davis--they certainly seem to be good enough for ASU and UNC!

Coker is not my first choice, and there are a number of reasons why--including the fact that building a program and maintaining a program are totally different--but I'm not going to be real worked up if we hire this guy. He has a NC ring to recruit with and has experience winning big games. As a school who is in competition with Duke and Florida International for the worst team in the nation, we'd be lucky to get someone with that resume--brawls on the field or not.

BTW, we've been bad. But over the last 10 seasons, the following teams have been worse: Illinois, Rutgers, Arkansas State, New Mexico State, Ball State, Louisiana-Monroe, Indiana, Utah State, Nevada-Las Vegas, Kent, Louisiana-Lafayette, Eastern Michigan, Vanderbilt, Baylor, Florida International, Army, Temple, Duke, Buffalo. Even if you just look at Bennett's time here, there are at least 8-10 teams with worse records than ours. Not that that's anything to be bragging about, but I'm tired of reading that we're in the bottom three.

ponyboy, in this what-have-you-done-for-me-lately world, it's understandable that some would look at SMU in a snapshot view and conclude they are among the worst teams in the country.

Understood. I just don't want to hear any more that we're vying for the title as the worst team.

bludgeon

Blogger still makes a convincing point, even if nobody was bludgeoned under Coker's regime.

I remember a pretty serious bench clearing brawl in 1990 up in Denton. Helmets were being used as weapons, teams met in the middle of the field, etc. No one accused Forrest of having lost control of his team. It helps when it's not on espn every ten minutes.

Yeah...all we do around here is punch out gay stalkers...that's christian, right?

So, are you saying you think he should have turned the other cheek? That's not very popular among the christian set, either.

Hang in there, SMUFootballBlog. This is a tough crowd that doesn't appreciate it when others try to help out or comment on the coaching search at SMU.

in his defense, presenting the other cheek when dealing with gay stalkers isn't always the best option...

Actually my point was the loving christian attitude towards gays in general. IMHO, stalkers of any sort should always be punched out if they won't leave you alone. :D
